Spartans have three champs in own invite

Posted

If you were to walk into the wrestling room at Luxemburg-Casco High School, the hardware collection alone might make you think the Spartans eat, drink and sleep wrestling.

You wouldn’t be too far off.

Chas Treml, a 1997 L-C graduate and two-time state qualifier, has been the head coach for more than a decade now. The coaches dig into the importance of nutrition, sleep and everything else it takes to be at your best.

“You grow up with wrestling here,” Treml said. “Our youth program, 4K to fourth grade, I think we had 130, 140 kids in that room recently. There’s a lot of history up. I like to celebrate that, we have a lot of alumni that come back and want to be a part of it, keep that tradition going. It’s not enough to say that this is a special program.

“There’s a lot of kids that come out for the first time. They don’t know what they’re doing, and they trust us. It’s built into the sport. Hopefully we’re always there for them.”

The Spartans hosted a tough, day-long invitational Saturday. L-C beat Oshkosh West 68-9, Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln 39-37, Sheboygan Falls 62-18 and Marshfield 33-32 before falling to Bay Port 46-28.

Senior Calvin Henderson (285 weight class) was one of three unbeatens on the day.

“A lot of the matches we lost (to Bay Port) I know we could have won,” Henderson said. “A lot of them came down to the wire. I think we’re coming back for something big when we face them again (Saturday). I don’t think they’re ready for Battle on the Bay.”

Junior Carson Neubert (144) and sophomore Mason Boulanger (157) also were undefeated Saturday, while junior Joseph Jeanquart (138) and freshmen Linken Bastien (150) and Josiah Bastien (165) all went 4-1.

Henderson was the top heavyweight, winning by fall in 1:45, by forfeit and twice by technical fall, helping the Spartans edge Rapids with a 5-4 decision.

Boulanger had four pins in times of 1:10, 2:15, 1:34, and 1:48, and one win by forfeit.

After dropping a 4-3 decision in his first match, Jeanquart won by pin, forfeit and a pair of technical falls.

Linken Bastien had two quick pins, both in 40 seconds, and two others in 1:06 and 3:58. His lone loss was by fall against Lincoln.

Josiah Bastien won by pin, technical fall, forfeit and decision before losing a 12-7 decision against his Bay Port opponent.

Neubert had five pins on the day, with fall times of 1:29, 3:19, 1:27, 0:50 and 1:34. He went 55-6 as a freshman at 120, and was 55-1 at 126 last year, a Div. 1 state champion.

“I really want to make it to team state again,” Neubert said. “That was such a cool experience my freshman year. And I want to win state individually again.”
Boulanger said he’s a lot more comfortable on his feet this year, and has a goal to win state.

Henderson wants to win state as well, but said being a good leader is where he’s at.

“It’s a lot more fun when you’re with the team,” Henderson said. “Our team rallies behind everyone. When there’s one wrestling, you’ll see six or seven of us sitting matside cheering ‘em on.”

Treml said sports is the heartbeat of the community.

“It creates that competitiveness that can help you in general,” Treml said. “You look at our kids in the classroom, they’re pretty top-notch. Our alumni are doing some great things. Coaches, teachers, administrators, parents — everyone needs to step up.”

As for his team in 2025-26, he said the sky’s the limit.

“They’re so young,” Treml said. “We had some little mistakes, some tough battles today. That’s just going to make them smarter, make them strong, make them more aware.”

Scheduling some of the best competition they can find is a hallmark of L-C wrestling.

“Irons sharpens iron,” Treml said. “That’s how you get better. The end of the season is the payoff.”

Niemojuski champ, Boeder second at Kimberly Papermaker Invitational
Kewaunee sophomore Arianna Niemojuski pinned all four of her opponents to win the 165-pound championship at the Papermaker Invitational Saturday.

Niemojuski won with fall times of 1:24, 1:32, 1:42 and 2:42, respectively.

Meanwhile, senior Mitchell Boeder went 3-1 at 285, winning by three straight falls in times of 35 seconds, 1:23 and 1:23 again before losing by fall in the championship match to Devin Otto of Coleman (5:46).

The Storm’s Aiden Ducat (132) and Samuel Kraynik (106) each went 2-1 and finished third, while Trevor Gauthier went 4-1 at 165, placing fifth.

Georgel second at Eagle Scramble

L-C senior Kiley Georgel placed second at 235 in the Eagle Scramble at Southern Door last Friday. She had a trio of pins (1:04, 1:11 and 0:50), but lost twice by fall to Wisconsin Lutheran star Izabella Riebe.
