Spartans move to 4-2 with win over Denmark

LUXEMBURG – Things are starting to come together nicely for the Luxemburg-Casco girls basketball team, only a game behind Marinette for the top spot in the North Eastern Conference standings after their latest win, a low-scoring but methodical 37-27 win over Danmark on Monday, Dec. 11 at home.

“We outmuscled them,” said L-C head coach Beth Budnik on her team’s slight disadvantage height-wise against Denmark. “We hang our hats on playing good defense and tonight, we definitely did that.”

The Spartans, who played smart and aggressive for the whole contest on Monday, got a lot of hustle out of Gabby Welch, who pulled down 10 rebounds to go along with her seven points while Brianna Bray led the team in scoring with 10 points.

“They’ve improved so much since the beginning of the year. I’m really loving this ride that they’re taking me on,” coach Budnik said after the game. “They’re buying into the system and really putting all of their heart into what we’re doing.”

L-C clips Wrightstown

WRIGHTSTOWN – The Luxemburg-Casco girls are above .500 at 3-2 following a 58-56 victory over Wrightstown on Thursday, Dec. 7.

In an extremely close game, the Spartans got 14 points from Erin Cherovsky, along with three rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Alayna Deprez added another 14 points, five boards, an assist and a steal.

Wolves rout Bulldogs

ALGOMA – The Wolves ran all over the Bulldogs on Thursday, Dec. 7, with a 51-28 final for their second win of the season.

Algoma, jumping out to a 29-8 lead by halftime on its way to putting the game away early, was led by Rylee Zimmerman’s 12 points, followed by 11 from Jadyn Nellis and eight from Brooke Mattson.

Algoma falls to Sevastopol

SEVASTOPOL – The Algoma girls’ quest for a second-straight victory was derailed by a 37-30 final against Sevastopol on the road Tuesday, Dec. 12.

In the loss, the Wolves got 11 points from Rylee Zimmerman, nine from Jadyn Nellis, six from Claire Gerdmann and two each from Sierra Slaby and Nora Krause.

Storm smash Blazers

KEWAUNEE – The Kewaunee girls remain undefeated at 5-0 following their most recent game, a 62-18 dismantling of GB NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy on Thursday, Dec. 7.

Gabbi Stangel was all over the place in this one, turning in a game-high 21 points along with three rebounds, two assists and three steals.

Summer Walechka and Jade Kroll each added 10 points for Kewaunee.
