Spartans, Storm pound out the hits

Zimmerman closes in on 700 strikeouts as Wolves face Eagles

Posted

Luxemburg-Casco improved to 19-3 on the season after winning five of seven games in the past week, with both losses by a single run.

Ranked ninth in Div. 2, the Spartans are in second place in the North Eastern Conference at 13-3, trailing fourth-ranked Denmark (18-3), which hasn’t lost a conference game.

Both L-C and Kewaunee pounded out the hits in a number of games this past week. More on that below.

Meanwhile, Algoma senior Macie Zimmerman is closing in on 700 career strikeouts after getting 15 in a two-hit, 7-0 shutout over Sevastopol last Thursday and 11 more in an 8-4 win over Coleman Tuesday.

While she may get there on a windy Friday at Southern Door, what isn’t known is how the Wolves will fare against the host Eagles, ranked eighth in the state in Div. 3. Should Algoma pull off a doubleheader upset, the Packerland Conference standings will be a logjam at the top.

With two conference losses, Southern Door is in the driver’s seat. But if the Wolves win both games on the road, a Peshtigo at Oconto makeup game Tuesday will need to be factored in.

Peshtigo split with Algoma, Kewaunee and Southern Door this season. The Bulldogs beat the Blue Devils 13-8 Tuesday in the opener, but were trailing 4-1 in the third inning of game two when lightning forced postponement.

The Wolves are 10-4 in the conference, 12-7 overall. Kewaunee finished 12-4 in conference play and is 16-9. They’ll play a non-conference game at Crivitz Tuesday.

In Thursday’s first win over the Pioneers, Zimmerman had three hits, including a pair of doubles. Kenzie Lischka doubled and singled, and Madison Schneider had two hits. Sadie Rikkola suffered a broken hand sliding into first base.

In a 14-1, six-inning win in the nightcap, Amya Lukes and Emma DeMeuse each had three hits, and Zimmerman, Natalie Ray and Ryley Tweedy each two. Lukes, Ray and Zimmerman all doubled. Lukes and Lishka each had three RBIs. Lischka got the win on the mound, allowing five hits while striking out two.

Lischka added two RBIs among her three hits in the win over Coleman, including a double. Lukes, Schneider, Zimmerman and Tweedy each had a pair of hits, while Ray had three RBIs.
Algoma travels to Luxemburg-Casco for a non-conference game Monday.

Kewaunee softball

The Storm split with Peshtigo Friday before hammering Sturgeon Bay Tuesday in a pair of four-inning shutouts.

Ali Repitz got the win in a 3-2 opener against the Bulldogs, with Breanna Riha throwing three innings of no-run ball in relief. Repitz had five strikeouts and allowed five hits with no walks, while Riha struck out two and gave up three hits and two walks.

Riha and Vivian Bootz each had two hits, with Bootz and Repitz each getting a double. Cora Schleis’ RBI single in the top of the fourth proved to be the difference.

Riha took the loss in game two, allowing six runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in four innings. Repitz was also hit hard in relief as Peshtigo racked up 15 hits. Meanwhile, the Storm got just six hits, including doubles by Kambriea Last and London Karnopp.

In a 15-0 win in the first game against the Clippers Tuesday, Riha homered, tripled and singled, driving in five runs. Repitz, Bootz and Schleis each doubled, and Last had a triple. Repitz gave up just two hits and struck out six in four innings.

In the nightcap, Riha had three doubles and a homer, driving in six runs, in a 21-0 win. Repitz had two doubles, and Last and Bootz each three hits, with Last getting a double and Bootz a home run. Karnopp added had a pair of hits. Repitz got another win, with six strikeouts and four hits allowed.

L-C softball

On Friday, L-C split with Wrightstown, losing 5-4 before winning the nightcap, 13-5. The Spartans had 15 hits in game one, including three each from Gracie Jandrin, Karsyn Walczyk and Claire and Stella Schleis, and two from Deprez.

In game two, Deprez had three hits and four RBIs. Abigail Buckmaster also had three hits, and Riley Westland two. Claire Schleis tripled.

On Saturday, the Spartans beat New London 6-5 and Seymour 12-2. Claire Schleis homered and doubled and Westlund had three hits, including a double, in the first game. Westlund added four hits, including a double, in the second game. Jandrin added a pair, including a double.
