LUXEMBURG - St. Paul Lutheran Church will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the start of the Lutheran (Protestant) Reformation on Oct. 29 with a special service, followed by a Reformation Walk and German meal.
The Reformation is generally considered by religious historians to have begun when Martin Luther, professor of moral theology at the University of Wittenberg, Germany, published his “95 Theses” proposing among other things that spiritual redemption must come from within a person, not from efforts like buying indulgences from the Catholic Church of the time. Luther sent his “95 Theses” in a letter to the Archbishop of Mainz on Oct. 31, 1517, and legend has it that he also nailed it to the door of several churches in Wittenberg.
The celebration at St. Paul will begin with a special worship service at 9:30 a.m. that includes special music from the children’s choirs of St. Paul Lutheran School and Sunday School, adult choir, and band. The Rev. Dr. Daniel Olson will have a special message titled “Reformation.”
Following the service is the Reformation Walk, which is designed to give participants of all ages the chance to step back 500 years in history and experience some of the sights, sounds and tastes of the time and learn how the world was changed forever. Along the way, participants will follow in the footsteps of Luther and meet some of the individuals who played a role in transforming the Church and the world.
The German meal will be served following the service until 1:30 p.m. It will offer pork roast, sauerkraut, baby red potatoes, dumplings, cole slaw, applesauce, dessert, coffee and milk. The cost is $10 for ages 11 and older, $5 ages 5-10, free for ages 4 and younger, Children (5-10 years): $5, and children under 5 years are free. For those who do not care for the German meal, a meal of a hot dog, macaroni and cheese, applesauce, dessert, and milk is offered for $5. Take-outs will be available. Meal tickets can be purchased the day of the event but advance purchases are appreciated.
