Storm girls eyeing ‘3’-peat

Spartans host first-place Denmark, Wolves get Kohler

Kewaunee’s girls basketball team is taking the one-game-at-a-time approach seriously, and that’s been a problem for the rest of the Packerland Conference.

The Storm are pouring in the points this season, including 14 three-pointers in a pair of wins in the past week as Lynn Geier’s team shoots for at least a share of its third straight conference title.

Kewaunee improved to 9-0 in Packerland play after pounding Oconto 63-34 Friday and Peshtigo 79-40 Tuesday. The Storm were 14-4 overall heading into Thursday’s tough non-conference game at Seymour.

Jade Kroll had seven three-pointers and a combined 68 points in the two wins, scoring 32 vs. the Blue Devils before going off for 36 against the Bulldogs.

Gabby Stangel added 11 points and Braelyn Chevalier 10 in last week’s game, with Chevalier hitting a pair of 3s. Kroll scored 22 of her 36 in the first half at Peshtigo, and Stangel all of her 15 in the first 18 minutes. Summer Walechka added 13 points. Kroll netted four 3s and Stangel three in the game.

Meanwhile, Algoma improved to 11-1 in conference, 12-6 overall, with wins over visiting Sevastopol last Friday, 57-35, and at Southern Door Tuesday, 66-40.

Jadyn Nellis scored 13 points against the Pioneers, while Ella Severinsen and Lauren Loucks each added 10 and Claire Gerdmann eight. Nellis hit a trio of three-pointers.

“When Reggie (Reagan Schneider) got hurt, Ella picked up that scorer’s mentality,” Zastrow said. “Therese (Gerdmann) and Claire were doing a really good job on the glass early, and Lauren, I was really happy with her effort. We talked to her about going stronger and being a physical presence, and she absolutely took that to heart.”

Loucks had another solid game Tuesday, scoring eight baskets inside for 16 points. Sadie Rikkola led with 17, including five 3s. Claire Gerdmann added 11 and Severinsen 10.

Algoma is off until hosting Kohler (16-3) Tuesday. Among their wins, the Blue Bombers have beaten Manitowoc Lutheran and Howards Grove. Kohler is ranked 9th in the Div. 4 coaches poll.

In North Eastern Conference play, Luxemburg-Casco was set to host Denmark Friday in a huge game. The Vikings are coming in 10-1 in conference play, while the Spartans are 8-3. L-C then travels to Wrightstown (5-6) Tuesday before hosting Freedom (6-4) next Friday.
Last Friday, the Spartans got 13 points from Chloe Host, 12 from Alayna Deprez and 10 from Sienna Blohowiak in a 56-33 win over Waupaca, then 17 each from Host and Brianna Bray in a 53-41 win over Marinette Tuesday. Bray knocked down five three-pointers.
