Kewaunee was the lone county survivor after the first week of WIAA girls basketball play.
The Storm beat Oconto Saturday night, 65-30, for its second straight regional title and the school’s ninth under Coach Lynn Geier. The others were in 1990 and ’91; 2011-’12-’13; and 2017 and 2019.
Kewaunee also won three sectional championships during Geier’s tenure, 2011 through 2013, as well as back-to-back Div. 3 state titles in 2012 and 2013.
Now in Div. 4, the Storm (21-5) hoped to win Thursday night in a sectional opener against Manitowoc Lutheran (22-4), the team that knocked them out of the sectional a year ago.
Earlier this season, Kewaunee had a 14-point lead at home on the Lancers, only to fall for the third straight time the past two years.
Last Friday, the Storm got a career-high 22 points from Braelynn Chevalier and beat Valders in a regional semifinal, 62-48. Jade Kroll added 15 and Gabby Stangel 12. Megan Hochkammer game-high 25 for the Vikings.
A night later, Kewaunee beat Oconto 65-30 for the regional crown. Kroll had 20 first-half points, including four three-pointers, as the Storm built a 31-11 lead. She finished with a season-high 38. Summer Walechka added 11, Breanna Riha eight, Stangel six and Ali Repitz two.
Already the school record-holder for points in a career — currently at 1,731 — Kroll broke the season points record formerly held by Brooke Geier early in the game against Valders. Even with missing one game due to illness, Kroll has poured in 582 points so far this season.
She found herself on all fours on the court more than once in a very physical game against Valders.
“She’s a warrior,” said Geier. “This means a lot to her, and the rest of the girls.”
“We don’t care about rankings,” Geier said. “We just go out and give it our best shot.”
The winner of Thursday’s semifinal will play the winner of Saint Mary Catholic vs. Stratford Saturday for the right to go to the state tournament at The Resch Center in Green Bay.
The WIAA began sponsoring a girls basketball tournament 50 years ago, in 1976.
Freshman Reagan Schneider scored a career high 19 points — 15 on five 3-pointers — to help the Wolves win a Div. 4 semifinal at Coleman Friday, 45-39. Claire Gerdmann added eight points, Ella Severinsen six, Therese Gerdmann five, Lauren Loucks four and Sadie Rikkola three.
One night later, Algoma’s season came to an end at Manitowoc Lutheran, 68-29. The Lancers’ two 1,000-point-plus career scorers, seniors Marissa Melhorn and Mikiah Krause, combined for 27 of their 37 points in the first half. Krause scored 14 of her game-high 20 points and Melhorn 13 of her 17 as the hosts built a 43-13 lead by halftime.
Claire Gerdmann scored seven of her team-high 11 points in the second half. Loucks had eight, Rikkola six, Schneider three and Therese Gerdmann one.
The Wolves played the whole season without All-Packerland forward Bristol Schmidt (knee injury), then lost top-scorer Jadyn Nellis prior to the tournament with a broken fibula.
L-C finishes 13-13
Luxemburg-Casco won a Div. 2 regional semifinal game Friday at home, powering past Plymouth 44-29 thanks to a balanced attack. Sienna Blohowiak scored 10 points, Alayna Deprez and Alana Mrotek each eight and Alayna Heurkens and Karsyn Walczyk each six.
The Spartans’ season came to an end at Appleton Xavier one night later as they fell to the top-seeded Hawks 67-46. Blohowiak had a game-high 22 points. Host added nine, Mrotek six, Deprez five and Alayna Heurkens four.
