The state’s top-ranked Div. 3 baseball team, the Kewaunee Storm, remained unbeaten at 19-0 and won its fourth straight Packerland Conference baseball title Tuesday.
It was the final leg of a triple crown for the Storm, a trifecta for the boys’ sports teams with Kewaunee’s first-ever unbeaten championships in football, basketball and baseball in the same school year.
Along the way, Coach Dan Spranger earned his 150th career victory.
Before starting at Kewaunee in 2017, Spranger took over the varsity job six games into the 2014 season at Racine Park due to the coach being removed from the position. A team that started 0-6 went on to win six games and took the regional championship as a 12 seed.
At Kewaunee, the Storm won a regional championship in 2022, then took the Packerland title the next four seasons. Spranger’s Storm teams have a combined record of 137-70.
“One of our goals every year is to win conference,” Spranger said. “It’s an accomplishment that we’re really proud of. The kids worked really hard for it, and they deserve it.”
On Saturday, Brett Paulsen and Jackson Walecka combined for a one-hit shutout in five innings in a 12-0 opening-game win at Peshtigo. Paulsen struck out seven and gave up one hit in three innings.
Diesel Bosdeck and Dane Harrell each went 3-for-3, with Bosdeck getting two triples and a double, and Harrell two doubles. Waylon Delain and Calvin Kolmorgen each had a pair of hits.
Delain earned the win in game two, a 5-4 nail-biter. He struck out seven in four innings. Noah Hudson got the save. Paulsen and Bosdeck each had two hits.
Tuesday’s Parent’s Night games at Kewaunee were both over in five innings.
Connor Kilgore had three hits, including a home run, in the 12-2 opener, while Delain had two hits. Kilgore had four RBIs and Bosdeck three. Kilgore’s final RBI ended the game, a perfectly-executed squeeze bunt that scored a streaking Bosdeck.
Paulsen struck out 10, but also hit three batters, walked a pair and gave up three hits.
“I think Brett needed to see that,” Spranger said. “It’s not that easy. The last couple times his pitch count has been up, and he hasn’t been in the zone as much as we’d like. These are things to be seen now that we can work out as it gets closer to the end of the season so we can get that corrected.”
Kilgore stayed hot in game two with a pair of hits, including a double. Delain also had two hits, and Landon LaTour and Hudson each had a hit and three RBIs. Harrell doubled, and Kolmorgen walked three times.
The Storm hosts Bonduel (14-3) on youth baseball night Friday before hosting Coleman Monday and traveling to Crivitz (15-1) Tuesday. They’ll wrap up the regular season hosting Luxemburg-Casco Saturday, May 23 and Valders Tuesday, May 26.
“Our next games are tough,” Spranger said. “We wanted to really challenge ourselves going into the playoffs, so we’re looking forward to these next five games.”
The Wolves swept Sevastopol Friday, a 1-0 walk-off win in game one and a 7-5 victory in the nightcap.
Braeden Leist laid down a perfect squeeze bunt in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Dylan Seiler in the opener. He had two hits in the game and also earned the win despite pitching to just one batter, getting a strikeout. Charlie Prokash started, striking out nine and walking two while giving up just three hits over six and two-thirds innings.
Jacob Massey got the win in game two, giving up just two hits and no earned runs over six innings, with seven strikeouts and three walks. Leist got the save.
Cayden Neuzil had a triple and single. He and Brogan Ray each had RBIs. The Wolves took advantage of 13 walks, including four by Prokash alone. Jonah Dahms and Cal DeMeuse each stole two bases.
On Monday at Reedsville, the Wolves lost 14-4 in five innings.
DeMeuse had two doubles and a single and Leist and Prokash each two hits. Algoma was 6-11 heading into Friday’s games against Sturgeon Bay. After that, it’s at Southern Door Tuesday and at Wrightstown Thursday.
The Spartans had a 9-8 record heading into Thursday’s game against Marinette, sandwiching a pair of 2-1 losses to Denmark and Oconto Falls with a 4-2 win over Xavier this past week.
L-C was limited to two hits against the Vikings, one each from Noah Chervenka and Tatem Klaubauf, and got six in the loss to the Panthers. Ethan Dachelet had a pair, and Ethan Werner doubled.
At Xavier Monday, Ethan Engum earned the win, allowing three hits and two runs over 4-1/3 innings. Klaubauf had a single and a double, and Chervenka a two-RBI triple. Jacob Coisman doubled.
After hosting Marinette Thursday, L-C is on the road Saturday at Freedom and Tuesday at Waupaca before returning to Luxemburg next Thursday to host Waupaca.
