Students in need can sign up for Back to School Program

KEWAUNEE COUNTY – The county Public Health Department is seeking to help local students in need as it accepts registrations, as well as donations, for its 2018-19 Back to School Program.

The program provides some of the required school supplies for families who are on the state WIC (Women, Infants and Children), FoodShare or Badger Care programs; those whose children are enrolled in the free or reduced-cost breakfast or lunch programs; or those who have found themselves in an emergency situation.

Registration forms were sent home with public school children at the end of the school year, but anyone in need of a form, including students attending parochial schools or those who are homeschooled, may pick one up at the Kewaunee County Public Health Department, 810 Lincoln Street, Kewaunee; Algoma Public Library, 406 Fremont St.; or Fox Communities Credit Union, 106 Main St., Luxemburg. Registrations will not be accepted by phone.

Forms must be sent by mail to the health department and received by Aug. 6 to guarantee the earliest available pick-up times. Forms received after Aug. 6 will be accepted, but those registrants will be assigned a later pick-up time. Families who turn in their forms ahead of the event will be sent a postcard about one week before notifying them of their assigned time.

Distribution of school supplies is scheduled for Aug. 15 at Lakehaven Hall, 96 Ellis St., Kewaunee. Children receiving the supplies should be present to “shop.” Walk-ins may come from 4:30 to 5 p.m.

Donations of school supplies and monetary donations are being accepted through Aug. 8.  Checks can be made out to the Kewaunee County Public Health Department and mailed to the department, Attn: Deanne Schultz; indicate that the donation is for the Back to School Program in the Memo.

School supplied needed include 1-inch, 3-ring binders; 2-pocket folders; colored pencils and crayons; markers and highlighters; wide- and college-ruled spiral notebooks; and dry-erase markers.

Donation boxes are located at many area churches, as well as Shopko Hometown in Kewaunee and Nicolet National Bank and Fox Communities Credit Union in Luxemburg. Supplies may also be dropped off at the Kewaunee County Public Health Department in Kewaunee.
