KEWAUNEE COUNTY – As of Jan. 23, Kewaunee High School Resource Officer Scott Szydel has announced his campaign to run for Kewaunee County Sheriff, following current Sheriff Joski’s retirement in 2027.
Szydel has extensive experience as a public servant, having served with Kewaunee County’s Sheriff’s Department and Kewaunee Police Department for 26 years, as well as the Kewaunee SWAT Team, Rescue and Fire Department.
Deputy Kevin Schmidt announced his campaign for Kewaunee County Sheriff on Jan. 6. Schmidt has worked as a public servant for decades, first at Algoma’s Fire and Rescue for 28 years and currently as a member of the Algoma City Council, where he has served for more than a decade, and as a Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Department deputy, where he has served for 25 years.
Operations and Division Lieutenant Eric Zellner announced his own campaign as of Jan. 27. Lt. Zellner has served with the Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Department for 28 years, having climbed the ranks while serving in many different positions. He worked part-time at first before becoming an officer, deputy and lieutenant, in addition to less-seen but equally valuable roles like drug investigator and evidence room manager.
The primary election will take place in August, followed by the general election in November. The position of sheriff has a four-year term.
