KEWAUNEE COUNTY – Kewaunee baseball continued its winning ways with a pair of non-conference wins this past week.
The Storm, the state’s top-ranked Div. 3 team, enters the WIAA playoffs with a 24-0 record. They earned a first-round bye, and will host the winner of Peshtigo at Sevastopol Tuesday. Win, and odds are that Kewaunee would host either Oconto or Crivitz for the regional championship Wednesday.
The Storm beat Luxemburg-Casco 8-1 Saturday on the road, then topped Valders 11-4 Tuesday at home.
On Saturday, winning pitcher Jackson Walecka struck out seven and allowed just four hits at L-C. Diesel Bosdeck struck out two in two innings of no-hit relief, and had three of the team’s nine hits. Brett Paulsen and Connor Kilgore each added a pair.
Noah Hudson won the five-inning game Tuesday (shortened by a storm), allowing four hits while striking out four, with no walks. Waylon Delain and Connor Kilgore each had doubles among their two hits. Micah Vanness had a pair of singles. Kewaunee took advantage of 10 walks, including three by Hudson and two each by Delain and Kilgore.
Meanwhile, Algoma hosted Mishicot in a Div. 4 opener Thursday, with the winner headed to Brillion for a regional semifinal Tuesday. The Spartans hosted Shawano in a Div. 2 opener. The winner plays at Little Chute on Tuesday.
On the softball side, Kewaunee was knocked out of the WIAA Div. 3 Tournament Tuesday, but Luxemburg-Casco (Div. 2) and Algoma (Div. 4) each got wins to advance to Regional Championship games Thursday.
The Storm’s season ended at Brillion, a 9-3 loss. Kewaunee (16-11) led 3-2 after four, but the Lions scored seven in the bottom of the fifth. London Karnopp had three of the team’s nine hits, including a double, with two RBIs. Breanna Riha and Ali Repitz each had a pair of hits.
The Spartans improved to 20-6 with a 7-0 shutout of Marinette Tuesday. The second-seeded Spartans hosted three-seed Seymour Thursday for the right to advance to Sectional play Tuesday.
L-C got back on track after losing to Mosinee last Thursday by scores of 10-1 and 7-1. The Spartans got just 10 hits combined, one of them a home run by Abigail Buckmaster. Alayna Deprez tripled.
In the tournament opener, Jasmine Jandrin threw a two-hitter, while Riley Westlund and Gracie Jandrin each had two hits. The Spartans took advantage of eight walks.
At Algoma, the Wolves had two on with two outs in the bottom of the sixth against Sevastopol Tuesday, clinging to a 7-6 lead. A thunderstorm forced an early end, and the WIAA rules reverted to the score after five, giving the Wolves a 7-3 win.
Winning pitcher Macie Zimmerman scattered three hits through five innings while striking out seven and walking three. Amya Lukes, Natalie Ray and Ryley Tweedy each had two hits.
In a steady rain in the top of the sixth, Sienna Cain launched a two-RBI triple off the fence, followed by an RBI single, to seemingly make it 7-6. Algoma had two on with two outs when game was suspended. The Wolves (13-9) hosted Markesan Thursday in a D-3 Regional Final.
The Spartans were 15-9 heading into Thursday’s game at home against Shawano Community. L-C beat Waupaca 7-1 Thursday and Algoma 5-1 Saturday as part of a non-conference doubleheader.
Gavin Lax got the win over Waupaca, allowing just five hits and a single run in five innings, with eight strikeouts. Eli Derenne struck out one in relief. Noah Chervenka, Ethan Werner, and Jacob Coisman each had two hits.
Against the Wolves, Ethan Engum earned the win. He struck out nine while walking just one over six innings. Billings earned the save. Algoma got just four hits to L-C’s six. Werner had a double.
In addition to the loss to L-C, the Wolves (9-14) came up short in a 3-2 game against Wrightstown last Thursday despite outhitting the Tigers 10-5.
Jonah Dahms and Jacob Massey each had three hits, with Dahms getting a triple. Charlie Prokash struck out seven and allowed just five hits in six innings for Algoma.
