Time to rest up after one busy weekend

Posted

Wow! It was a tiring weekend and I even behaved. Eleven of us went up to the Island Casino for a weekend of my two favorite things that start with G, golfing and gambling.

Due to an ankle injury, I didn't play golf but rode along and watched the girls play. It's not nearly as much fun as playing the game, though. But my sore ankle was happy being idle.

We had a good time in spite of not winning at the machines and not being able to golf. It's always fun when you're able to spend quality time with good friends. Some of the gals did a little winning, but not this one.

Our group included Kathy Brown, Deb Pribek, Tina LeLou, Rosie Bonlander, Fay Conard, Barb Hill, Terry Van Pay, Gail Haack, Nancy Welch, Shelly Dembinski and yours truly. Everyone got along. I didn't hear one cross word and we had a lot of laughs.

All in all, it made for a great weekend. The only thing that would have made it better would have been winning in the casino. And of course, I would have had more fun had I been able to golf. But it is what it is. I'm glad I was able to be there. And I will have that sore ankle checked out this week.

Last night, Becky Duescher and I, who each have a birthday on the same day, went out to do a little celebrating of the event. It was good to see her again and we had a good time. It used to be that we'd be out late, but last night, I was home by nine and happy to be there. My, how times have changed. I guess I really am getting old. Back in the old days, 20 or 30 years back, we used to hit most of the taverns in town before heading for home. Last night we hit the Waterfront and Kewaunee Bowl and then I was ready to hit the crib.

• I found this short story on the internet that was published in the Reader's Digest. It was titled, “A Fly-Killer’s Pickle.”

A woman's three-year-old daughter stuck out her hand and said, “Look at the fly I killed, Mommy.” Since she was eating a juicy pickle at the time, her mom thrust her contaminated hands under the faucet and washed them with antibacterial soap.

After sitting her down to finish her pickle, her mom asked, with a touch of awe, “How did you kill that fly all by yourself?” Between bites, she said, “I hit it with my pickle.”

That was submitted to that site by Cindy Yates, from Mill Valley, Calif. I thought it was a cute story.

Have a great week, everyone.
