Algoma’s Elizabeth Truckey, who was selected to play in the Wisconsin High School Honors Band last year, recently returned from Indianapolis where she played in the Honor Band of America.
The Roncalli High School junior, who plays the bari saxophone, was one of only two students chosen from Wisconsin to play in the band after she auditioned.
“It felt really amazing to be there and play with people as dedicated as I am and who share the same passion,” said Truckey.
A highlight of the event was meeting composer John Mackey, she said. The Honor Band of America program featured one of his compositions, “The Ringmaster.”
Truckey, who practices at least two hours a day, is taking lessons from Professor David Hastings at the University of Wisconsin-Steven’s Point.
Known for her rare “silver bari sax,” which her parents, Jim and Lynn Truckey, purchased from Instrumental Music Co. in Green Bay, Truckey said she is hoping to continue her musical performances by attending an Honors Band camp this summer and playing in a performance at the Overture Center in Madison this October.
