ALGOMA – Friends of Crescent Beach, Friends of the Ahnapee State Trail and Yardstick Books are excited to announce a special Tyke Hike on the Ice Age Trail as part of the 2025 Mammoth Hike Challenge. This fun, family-friendly event is a great way to introduce children to the joy of hiking while celebrating Algoma’s connection to the trail.
Led by Myles the Mammoth, the Tyke Hike will take place on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 10 a.m. starting at the pavilion near the Algoma Youth Club. Families will hike south along the Crescent Beach Boardwalk to the Algoma Visitor Center and back, a round trip of approximately one mile. Along the way, participants will discover fun facts and sights from this scenic section of the Ice Age Trail.
This hike is geared toward children ages seven and under, but all families are welcome. Strollers and wagons are encouraged, and participants are invited to get creative with costumes or decorated wagons/strollers — think little mammoths, trail critters or woodland explorers. Everyone will have the chance to snap a photo with Myles to commemorate the adventure.
After the hike, the fun continues inside the Algoma Youth Club, featuring:
• A reading of Penny’s Ice Age Trail Adventure by author Kris Van Handel.
• Engaging activities for kids and families.
• A light snack for all participants.
The Tyke Hike is free to attend, and registration is strongly encouraged to help organizers prepare. Register at www.bit.ly/4nmqqu1.
As part of the Mammoth Hike Challenge, participants will earn the mile hiked plus five bonus miles toward their Challenge total, as well as the opportunity to add Algoma as one of their visited Trail Communities.
In case of inclement weather, the entire event will be moved indoors to the Algoma Youth Club.
The event is free and will take place at the pavilion by the Algoma Youth Club, 620 Lake St., from 10 a.m. to noon.
