UPDATE: Kewaunee County flooding: A number of road closures, Kewaunee River flood warning

Like its neighbors in Brown County, Kewaunee County has seen a number of roads closed by flooding since Thursday afternoon, and the Kewaunee River is under a flood warning that was extended by 12 hours Friday afternoon.

However, the floods were mostly standing water instead of rushing water, Sheriff Matt Joski said, and he hopes things will start drying out in the next day or so.

"It was mostly the typical areas where there's usually some flooding," Joski said. "(Thursday) we had some in areas you usually don't see (flooding) ... There are numerous areas, really any of the low-lying areas have standing water. I anticipate in the next 24 hours, it will start to subside."

Among the major roads closed are State 54 near Walhain and County F near Winter Park in Kewaunee.

The flood warning from the National Weather Service reports that as of 10 a.m. the Kewaunee River was at a stage of 16.6 feet. Flood stage is 14 feet and impacts can be felt at 16 feet, the service said. The warning originally was in effect until 3:45 a.m. Saturday but was extended to 3:45 p.m. The service noted that smaller streams may see water levels drop as they empty into larger rivers, but those larger waterways may continue rising over the next day with the flow from the streams and as snowmelt continues to saturate the ground.

Joski said there were no reports of flood problems in the shoreline cities of Kewaunee or Algoma, and the Ahnapee River wasn't posing any unusual problems.
