UPDATE: Mailbox vandals identified in Kewaunee County

KEWAUNEE COUNTY - Four people, including juveniles, were identified by the Sheriff's Department as those who vandalized numerous mailboxes throughout the county Tuesday night.

At 8:27 p.m. Tuesday, the department received a call from a Town of Montpelier resident that damage had been done to their mailbox.

Shortly after this initial call, the department received another call regarding a mailbox which had been damaged.

Deputies responded to the area and, while investigating the two complaints, discovered many other mailboxes throughout the townships of Montpelier, Franklin and West Kewaunee also had been damaged. Other calls to report damages came to the Sheriff's Department.

Along with the damaged mailboxes, the windshield of a truck and some road signs were damaged. The signs and some of the mailboxes were damaged by a firearm, while a blunt instrument was used to vandalize the rest.

Sheriff Matt Joski said the degree of damage varies, with some mailboxes slightly damaged and others having serious damage.The number of damaged boxes and signs is still being compiled and investigated as of Friday evening.

Late Friday afternoon, the Sheriff's Department issued a press release saying four individuals, ages 15 to 18, were questioned and admitted to being involved in the vandalism. Charges and juvenile referrals will be filed with the Kewaunee County District Attorney's office.

Joski said in the press release that, along with his department's dispatchers and the investigating deputies, credit for finding the vandals goes to school liaison deputies and a number of students who provided information to help solve the case.
