KEWAUNEE COUNTY – Just more than a week after the county's snowmobile trails opened for the season, warmer temperatures are seeing them close for use as of Feb. 23.
Six snowmobile clubs groom and maintain the nearly 205 miles of trails and provide updates on their condition to the Kewaunee County Promotions & Recreation Department. Friday, the clubs began reporting a deteriorating snow base, and the recent cold spell is predicted to give way to air temperatures above freezing over the next few days.
The Promotions & Recreation Department announced Friday that Section 1 (Red River), Section 2 (Algoma, Ahnapee, Pierce, Lincoln) and Section 3 (Luxemburg, Montpelier) all closed at 8 a.m. Sunday.
Section 4 (Casco, Franklin, Kewaunee, West Kewaunee) was planned to remain open until further notice with possible partial closures, but the county announced it would close Sunday morning as well.
The Promotions & Recreation Department will continue to keep trail conditions up to date on its 24/7 hotline at 920-388-7199.
