U.S. excels at Rio Olympics while we seek heat relief

Posted

The United States is certainly doing us proud at the 2016 Olympics. As of this writing, our country has earned 28 gold medals, 29 silver and 28 bronze for a total of 85. And five of those golds have have been earned by Michael Phelps in swimming competition. He also has one silver.

According to the Internet this morning, the U.S. has 33 swimming medals, 12 more in gymnastics and 12 in track and field. And, as of Tuesday night, fencing delivered four medals. Besides Phelps, Simone Biles (gymnastics) and Katie Ledecky (swimming) took five medals each.

So, congratulations go out to all American Olympians for doing us proud in 2016. It has made for some great TV the last couple of weeks.

• I guess we are in the “dog days” of summer. The heat and humidity just keeps on coming. But according to the weather people on television, there is a cool front coming soon. It will be a relief to have some cooler temperatures for a change.

Now, I'm not looking forward to fall and winter seasons, but just a little relief from the heat and humidity. The last several Thursdays at golf have been under the threat of rain, with one of them being a complete rainout. Last week it started to rain as we finished up on No. 8. So we spent about 10 minutes under the trees on the ninth hole tee, waiting for a brief shower to end, which it did.

The group in front of us wasn't so fortunate as they were in the middle of the hole and got drenched. So far, rain is not in the forecast for this Thursday, thank goodness. But it's going to be hot and humid. Oh well, it is August after all.

• I was on the Internet the other day and found this joke about a senior couple. It goes like this:

Bob, age 92, and Mary, age 89, are all excited about their decision to get married. While out for a stroll to discuss the wedding they pass a drugstore.

Bob suggests they go in. Bob asks to speak to the pharmacist. He explains they’re about to get married, and asks, "Do you sell heart medication?" "Of course we do," the pharmacist replies.

"Medicine for rheumatism?" "Definitely," he says. "How about Viagra?" "Of course.”"Medicine for memory problems, arthritis, jaundice?" "Yes, the works.""What about vitamins, sleeping pills, Geritol, antacids?" "Absolutely." "Do you sell wheelchairs and walkers?" "All speeds and sizes."

"Good," Bob says to the pharmacist. "We’d like to register for our wedding gifts here, please."

And on that note, have a great week, everyone.
