SAN FRANCISCO - von Stiehl Winery of Algoma earned a gold medal for its 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon at the 2020 USA Wine Ratings International Competition, one of six medals awarded to wines from von Stiehl.
The third annual competition held last week is meant to judge wines for their appeal to potential consumers across the wine drinking spectrum. It scores wines from around the world on a 100-point system based on its quality and drinkability, its value for the money and packaging design. The competition is sponsored by the Beverage Trade Network, a San Francisco-based organization, and judges included wine and beverage directors, sommeliers and wine buyers. A score of 90 to 100 is needed to receive a gold medal, 80 to 89 for a silver and 70 to 79 for bronze.
“The gold medal-winning 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is a great example of our growth as winemakers and our brand,” von Stiehl general manager Anthony Bilwin said in a press release. “This Cabernet showcases how supple and elegant Sierra Foothills AVA fruit can be when aged 16 months in French Hybrid barrels. It releases fragrant aromas of cassis, black cherry and plum with balanced tannins and flavors of dark berries and currant.”
Four von Stiehl wines came away with silver medals: its Riesling, which scored 87 points, Dolcetto (86), Sangiovese Grosso (85) and Cherry Bounce (85). Also, von Stiehl Stony Creek Rose’ won a bronze with 78 points.
