Wallace family to host Breakfast on the Farm

FORESTVILLE — Paul Wallace Jr. described his 315-acre farm as a typical small family farm.

“Cows are still tie-stalled in the barn. Milking units are moved by hand,” he said with a proud smile.

But in one week, there will be nothing typical on his farm.

That’s because the Kewaunee County Dairy Promotion’s Breakfast on the Farm will take place June 11 on the Wallace Dairy Farm, northeast of Algoma.

Breakfast on the Farm events are held annually in counties across Wisconsin in recognition of June Dairy Month in the state.

A number of activities take place during the breakfast, but of course the highlight is the breakfast itself, a dairy brunch that at the Wallace farm will offer huge omelets, fresh rolls and butter, milk, a variety of cheeses, strawberry ice cream sundaes, pizza, deep-fried cheese curds and mozzarella sticks, and samples of yogurt.

It’s not the first time the dairy farm hosted the popular breakfast. Wallace’s father, Paul Wallace, Sr., rolled out the tractors in 1984.

“I believe it was the second year for Kewaunee’s Breakfast on the Farm,” Wallace said. “That year they served 1,000. We plan to serve 5,300 people.”

The second-generation farmer sat down on a patio table in the center of his farm under crystal blue skies and freshly painted red barns and granary recently to explain the preparation involved for a host farm.

“It’s quite simple,’’ he said. “My dad’s advice was to clean up the farm as much as you can. We’ve been remodeling and landscaping this spring.”

You just need to find the hours to complete the sprucing-up in between planting and milking. There are 200 cows and 80 chickens surrounded by corn, hay and barley to plant and maintain. The last days will be pressure washing and whitewashing.

Paul and his wife, Corrina Wallace, will be joined by their son, Aidan, 16, and daughter, Emersyn, 14.

I’m excited, but my wife is nervous,” Paul said with a laugh. “I think people want to see a small farm operation.”

You could reach out and touch a cow if you so desired during the breakfast.

Visitors can also hop on horse-drawn wagon rides, check out an antique tractor show and tour the farm. Children’s activities include an animal educational tent and petting zoo, plus entertainment for all.

Breakfast is served from 8 a.m. to noon. A non-denominational Mass is planned at 7 a.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at Dairyland Veterinary Service in Casco, Ebert Enterprises, Pagel’s Ponderosa Dairy or Rio Creek Feed Mill Inc.

Next year’s Breakfast on the Farm will be hosted by the Junion Homestead Farm.
