The Algoma High baseball team went ahead early, fell behind mid-way and then bounced back late in its non-conference game against Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah on April 28 en route to a 9-3 victory, one that pushed its overall record to 4-3.
The Spartans got two in the first inning but the Resorters plated a run in the second and third to tie things up before going ahead with a run in the fifth.
LC responded with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to cap the evening’s scoring and secure the victory.
The Luxemburg-Casco girls soccer team lost to Freedom 2-1 at Freedom on April 27 and now has an overall record of 2-5-1.
Claire Marohl scored for Luxemburg-Casco off an assist from Emi Kuhn and Tabi Lemens made 14 saves in goal.
The Spartans are 1-2 in North Eastern Conference play, with their only win coming via a 5-0 drubbing of Clintonville on the road.
Following week two of Wisconsin State High School Clay Target League competition, the Algoma High trap shooting team currently holds second place in Class One, Conference Six with a total score of 2,417, not far behind first place Weston High at 2,700.50.
Kewaunee High, competing in the same conference, is in sixth place with 1694.00 total points.
Luxemburg-Casco is representing the area in Class Two, Conference Five, where its 10,446.00 point total has the Spartans in fourth place.
The state tournament, where over 1800 students compete, will be held June 10 and 11 at the WTA Shooting Complex in Rome, WI. The Nationals Tournament in Mason, MI will be held July 6-9 and will feature more than 300 teams and 2400 participants.
The Kewaunee High baseball team dominated its Packerland Conference doubleheader against Algoma on Tuesday, posting two double-digit victories as it defeated the home team 14-0 and then 13-3 in the nightcap.
The storm got on the board early, plating a pair of runs in the opening before scoring four runs in the second, third and fourth innings.
Payton Kohnle was stellar at the plate for Kewaunee in the opener, going four-for-four with a home run and a double for his five RBIs.
Cal Ihlenfeldt, who got the win on the mound for Kewaunee, went three-for-four and also had a double and a homer on his way to six RBIs.
Tuesday’s second game saw the Wolves working with the lead early after plating one in the opening inning.
Algoma held on to its slim advantage until the top of the fourth when Kewaunee exploded for eight runs, followed by another five in the fifth.
Algoma put another two scores on the board in the bottom of the fifth but it wasn’t enough to keep the 10-run rule from ending the game early.
For the Storm, Mitchell Thompson went two-for-four and brought in three runs while teammates Kohnle and Ihlenfeldt each had two RBIs.
Thomas Stangl got the win on the mound for Kewaunee, striking out eight over three and two-thirds innings.
