Wolves lose Leist to leg injury

Storm keeps winning, Piesler sinks 10 threes

Algoma lost more than a pair of non-conference games this past week.

X-rays revealed that point guard Braeden Leist had a stress fracture in his right fibula, suffered in a home win last week. He’s expected to miss at least three weeks, which includes what was anticipated to be a battle for the top spot with Kewaunee next Tuesday at Algoma.

Thinking it was just soreness from a knee he took to the side of his calf in a 59-41 win over Crivitz, Leist played Saturday, a 68-49 road loss to unbeaten Reedsville (that since was beat by Manitowoc Lutheran). Parker Lischka had 17 points, Leist nine and Griffin Robinson seven, but the Wolves had their worst shooting night of the season.

In their first game without Leist, Algoma lost at Valders Monday, 47-45, again struggling shooting the ball, even at the line where they were just seven of 23. Robinson had 15 points (including two three-pointers), Charlie Prokash 11, Aiden Zeitler eight and Lischka seven. The Wolves dropped to 9-3.

Meanwhile, Kewaunee continued its winning ways, beating a solid Brillion team Monday, 65-49. The Storm improved to 9-0, with Connor Kilgore scoring 17 (including three 3s), Dane Harrell 16, Baylor Elliot 12 and Diesel Bosdeck and Avery Jerabek each six.

On Tuesday, Bryce Piesler made 10 three-pointers, one shy of Jake Zeitler’s school record, in Luxemburg-Casco’s 72-48 win at Clintonville. Piesler made 10-of-16 attempts from deep. Brayden Duescher was also in double figures with 10 points.

Friday night, L-C trailed Freedom 43-23 at the half and lost 74-56. Irish star Donovan Davis had all 15 of his points by halftime. Mason Burmeister led the Spartans with 11, Eli Derenne had nine, Ethan Ropson eight and Piesler and Duescher each seven. The Spartans are 6-5 on the season.
