Algoma got its top receiver back, but didn’t really need him in a 36-20 win over visiting N.E.W. Lutheran/Providence Friday night.
What was thought to be a broken collarbone for Cooper Fay last week ended up being just a hard shot to that general area, and Fay played against the Blazers.
Quarterback Ethan Melotte only threw four passes, completing two for 50 yards. He did most of the damage with his legs, rushing 28 times for 197 yards and three touchdowns as the Wolves improved to 2-1 in the Packerland-8 Conference, 4-1 overall.
“He’s been running hard,” said Algoma coach Wade Vandervest. “So is Jack Meverden, and Parker Stewart. And the line play has been solid overall. Just a few penalties where we need to be smarter on.”
Meverden gained 65 yards in 13 carries, including a TD; Stewart 32 in five tries, and sophomore Calvin Mayheu — grandson of long-time Algoma coach Steve Mayheu — had a 55-yard touchdown on his only rush of the night.
“We told (Calvin Mayheu) to cut back inside the block,” said Vandervest. “He was looking for the block, but there was no one there for our guard to block, so he just kept on going (down the left sideline).”
Vandervest was mentored under Mayheu, who stepped down after 30 years as head coach following the 2001 season. Vandervest was an assistant two years before taking over the head job in 2002. This is his 27th year as a coach at AHS, the last 25 as the head coach.
Having Steve’s grandson get his first varsity touchdown, Vandervest said, “was kind of like one of those full-circle moments.”
Mayheu added one catch for 11 yards, while Jacob Blahnik took the other for 39. Melotte had a pair of two-point runs, and Stewart had one.
Jack Schwader and David Tebon combined for 17 tackles, including two each for loss. Blahnik had seven tackles, including two sacks, and Tebon and Kaden Bielawski each had 1.5 sacks. Stewart had six tackles, and Reid Woelfel registered a sack. Brady Walker had five tackles and an interception.
The Wolves are at Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah this week before hosting Sevastopol in a Homecoming game Oct. 2.
Junior quarterback Diesel Bosdeck ran for two touchdowns and threw for another on a seven-TD night for the Storm in a 51-0 thrashing at Sturgeon Bay.
Bosdeck scored on runs of 11 and 24 yards in the first quarter as Kewaunee led 13-0. Baylor Elliot had an interception he took nearly 50 yards to the end zone to start the second quarter, and the Storm got two more TDs late — a Bosdeck to Peyton Schaller pass and a Dane Harrell run — to go up 35-0 by halftime.
Mason Kovacs returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a 75-yard touchdown, Blake Temme had a TD run and A.J. Spranger connected on a 30-yard field goal to round out the scoring.
Bosdeck finished 5-of-9 passing for 49 yards, one TD and one interception. Sophomore Brody Elliot threw it six times, completing three, for 24 yards. Schaller had three catches, Mason Delebreau two and Tucker DuFresne, Baylor Elliot and Harrell each one.
Temme gained 100 yards rushing on just nine carries, while Bosdeck got 50 in three tries. Harrell had 18 yards in three, Brody Elliot 26 in two and DuFresne six yards on one rush.
Landon LaTour had five pancake blocks and Blake Bortolini three. LaTour had seven tackles, six of them solo and five for loss, including a pair of sacks. Bortolini also had seven, with five solo and two for loss. Ethan Ratajczak had eight tackles, six solo, with one for loss. Harrell had four tackles.
Kewaunee (2-1 Packerland, 3-2 overall) is at Southern Door this week before returning to Don Rabas Field Oct. 2 for a Homecoming battle with Peshtigo. It’ll also be Parent’s Night and Alumni Night.
Eli Derenne (135) and Ben Klass (106) combined for 241 yards rushing and two touchdowns to lead the Spartans. Derenne got his on just 14 carries, while Klass ran the ball 23 times. Derenne was 5-of-11 passing for 90 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown to Trenton Price.
It was a defensive battle for much of the first half before Klass scored from six yards out, and L-C led 7-0 at the half.
Derenne and Price hooked up on the TD pass on the Spartans’ first possession of the third quarter, and
Wyatt Bailey nailed a 27-yard field goal on the next drive for a 17-0 lead.
After the Tigers got on the board, Derenne’s 47-yard TD run sealed it.
Price finished with 60 yards receiving on three catches, and Joey Jeanquart had 30 in two.
Defensively, the Spartans got 15 tackles from Ethan Werner, including nine solo. Grant Seering had six, and Lane Ledvina had a sack.
