ALGOMA – The Algoma girls basketball team improved its overall record  to 3-5 on the year with a solid 63-73 win over Southern Door at home on Tuesday, Dec. 15.

The Wolves started fast, with their outside shots falling early and, by halftime, they had sunk nine three pointers and found themselves on top 46-20 going into the locker room for the break.

Algoma’s hot shooting cooled off a bit in the second half but the sizable early lead held up and the team improved to 3-2 in Packerland Conference play.

Ryley Zimmerman was the game’s high scorer with 20 points while Brooke Battson chipped in 12. Sierra Slaby added 10 for Algoma.

“I’m happy with their effort. They’re working real hard and their mindset is excellent right now,” said Algoma head coach Mark Zastrow on what he thinks of his team’s progress so far this season. “We’re getting better every day.”

Algoma crushes New Holstein

ALGOMA – The Algoma girls built up a 37-15 first half advantage over visiting New Holstein en route to 55-34 victory in non-conference action on Monday, Dec. 18.

Now 4-5 overall, the Wolves put together another well-rounded night of offense, with Ryley Zimmerman turning in a game-high 18 points, Jadyn Nellis with 15 and Sierra Slaby with 13.

Spartans see win streak snapped

FREEDOM – The Luxemburg-Casco girls suffered a non-conference hit to their season record on Tuesday, Dec. 19 as they fell to Freedom by a final score of 39-27.

Erin Cherovsky, Sienna Blohowiak and Alayna Deprez each had six points for the Spartans, now 4-3 overall, 4-2 in the North Eastern Conference, while Briana Bray added four.

Storm batter Bulldogs

KEWAUNEE – The Kewaunee girls had little trouble defending their perfect record against Peshtigo at home on Friday, Dec. 15, upending the Bulldogs by a final score of 62-22 and moving to 7-0 for the year.

Gabrielle Stangel turned in 12 points to lead the Storm in scoring while also pulling down a rebound and recording a steal. Jade Kroll had 11 points, a rebound, three assists and three steals while Brianna Demmin finished with 10 points, two boards and a steal.

Editor’s Note: As the person solely responsible for this section’s accuracy, I’d like to correct a couple of errors in last week’s edition.

My apologies to coach Eric Schneider and the Algoma boys basketball team for listing them as losers in their game against NEW Christian Home School. The Wolves won that contest 68-63 (Thank you, Lisa for bringing that mistake to my attention).

Also, for as many times as we’ve put her name in the paper, one would think I’d know how to spell Ryley Zimmerman’s name by now. I flubbed that twice last week. Very sorry, folks.
