Woman rescued from Lake Michigan near Algoma; investigation continues

ALGOMA - An investigation continues as of Monday afternoon into the circumstances that led to a 50-year-old woman being rescued Friday morning, Oct. 1, from Lake Michigan.

That morning, The Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Department was called at about 10:10 a.m. with a report of a woman suffering from hypothermia. She had been found in the the lake about a quarter-mile from shore near Algoma by fishermen in the area who got her out of the water and brought her to the city harbor.

The Algoma Fire and Rescue Department tended to her on-site before she was taken to Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay. As of Friday, she was reported in stable condition under medical care, according to a press release from the sheriff's department. 

Units from the sheriff’s department and Algoma Police Department responded with assistance from the Algoma Department of Public Works to check the shoreline and adjacent waters for any vessels or individuals involved. It is believed the incident involved no other victims.

The Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation is helping the sheriff's department in their investigation. Also assisting in responding to the call were the U.S. Coast Guard and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
