Youth Art Month: “Day of the Arts”

New event offers free art workshops

Posted

ALGOMA – March is Youth Art Month (YAM), featuring Kewaunee County’s 5th Annual Youth Art Month Exhibit, which highlights work from Kewaunee, Algoma and Luxemburg-Casco High School students. Artwork from local high school students is featured in various local galleries, including Yonder and Clay on Steele. Organized by ArtBeet, Inc. in partnership with local galleries, this year’s celebration includes a new “Day of the Arts.”

“Day of the Arts” is a community-centered addition to YAM, dedicated to promoting local creativity, intergenerational connection and artistic exploration through hands-on participation. While YAM highlights the work of community youth, “Day of the Arts” encourages all ages to participate and create together. This event will take place on Saturday, March 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Day of the Arts” offers a variety of make-and-take, hands-on art experiences led by local artists. Participants will explore different mediums, including painting, drawing, sculpture and fiber arts, at various venues throughout downtown Algoma. The initiative aims to build community, foster creativity and enhance access to quality arts experiences.

Print

Pop into Yonder to get the opportunity to create original, one-of-a kind print by exploring different surfaces, painting and inking techniques. These works of art can be hand rubbed or can be run through their etching press.

Animation

Stop into Equilibrium Fine Arts and Creative Workshops and discover the magic of stop-motion animation. Participants will explore how still images come together to create movement, storytelling and visual impact. This hands-on experience is perfect for beginners and curious creatives alike — no prior experience needed. Just bring creativity and a smartphone, and get ready to experiment, collaborate and bring ideas to life one frame at a time.

Pottery

Clay On Steele will be open to the public to drop in for any amount of time to experience the joy of clay. There will be a variety of clay stations to explore. They will be demonstrating working on the potter’s wheel and invite visitors to try the process. There will be a space to pinch clay into forms, such as birds, monster pots and decorate clay tiles. Visitors can come and go as they please.

The Pottery Co-op is offering the opportunity to paint a handmade flower pot with acrylics to then be taken home.

Glass and engraving

Visit State Street Creation Station to make a suncatcher out of glass. There will be a couple of options available for different skill levels, but something for everyone. Older visitors can learn to cut glass, foil and solder to make a “true” stained glass piece, while younger visitors will create a mosaic type art piece from pre-cut glass. Participants will leave with a colorful piece of glass for their window, and an appreciation for the work involved.

Gloria Moore of BellaLuna’s Apothecary and Boutique invites the community to create their own unique intention bottle or blessing bottle. Intention bottles are small glass tube bottles with corks that people can fill up with crystal chips.

The laser engraver will be running at State Street Creation Station. Participants can create a small engraved tag from their own simple drawings or patterns that will be available.

Collage and painting

Join collage artist Cody Siewert — last year’s Youth Art Month first-place winner — for a creative collage session at State Street Creative Station Algoma. Known for his eye for unexpected materials, Cody will supply the goods and demonstrate collage techniques. Experiment with layers and ideas in this relaxed, creative workshop.

Find inspiration in the pages at Yardstick Books with a fun, drop-in collage project. Create 3D magnets with artist, Stephanie Maurer, using discarded book pages, photos and other visual treasures.

Nala Heer at Fishline Studios is offering a beginner and kid friendly watercolor workshop which guides participants through using simple shapes to recreate the Algoma Pierhead Lighthouse. Drop in anytime between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. to join the fun and take home your own colorful piece of Algoma along with a few easy tips to try at home.

“Day of the Arts” will be followed by an Open Mic night next Saturday at Equilibrium Fine Arts and Creative Workshops, located at 314 Steele St., Algoma, from 6-8 p.m. The mic is open to ages 8-18, with refreshments provided. All are welcome to attend.
