BRUSSELS – Hanna Mallien threw a second straight complete-game shutout as Southern Door edged Kewaunee, 2-0, in a WIAA Division 3 sectional semifinal softball game Tuesday night.

Kewaunee’s Kassi Smidel forces the out at second base against Kendra Dantoin of Southern Door during WIAA Division 3 sectional semifinal game Tuesday at Southern Door.

The Eagles, who are the No.3 seed in their bracket, advanced to face Weyauwega-Fremont in the sectional final at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Chilton, with the winner heading to next week’s state tournament. The second-seeded Indians upset Packerland Conference champion and top seed Oconto, 4-0, on Tuesday.

Mallien surrendered just four hits to come out on top of a pitcher’s duel with the Storm’s Ellie Olsen, who threw a five-hitter in the loss. Neither pitcher issued a walk.

It marked the third time the Eagles beat Kewaunee this year, following two wins in the Packerland season.

Southern Door grabbed the lead in the first inning. Erin Tadych singled with one out, moved to third base on a Megan Pavlik double and scored what would prove to be the winning run on Mallien’s sacrifice fly.

The Eagles added a little insurance in the fifth. Lexi Wery led off with a double but was still at second after two outs when Jessica Jacobson came in to pinch-run for Wery. Gabby Atkins then hit a flare that danced around in the strong wind and fell for a single, allowing Jacobson to score.

Southern Door (20-6) will play an Indians squad in the sectional final that has an overall record of 19-9 but went 13-1 to win the Central Wisconsin-Eight championship. The one common opponent the teams have this season is Kewaskum, with both being shut out by the D-2 school with a 24-3 record: the Eagles fell, 1-0, on May 13 and the Indians lost, 6-0, April 29.

Should the Eagles earn a state tournament bid, it will be their first appearance there since 2008.
