Almost time for shore salmon, trout

Posted

If you’re a shore-only angler — or a boat owner who still likes to cast the piers and walk the river banks — now’s the time to stock up on fresh spawn still in the skein.

If you aren’t a boat-owning angler catching mature salmon out on the lake, the best bet to get some fresh skein is to simply hang around the fish cleaning stations at Algoma, Kewaunee, Marinette or Sturgeon Bay and ask successful trollers if they plan to save it or not. Many don’t.

Some anglers use a commercially-bought preservative to cure the skein, then cut it into chunks. However, you can just cut it up and freeze it in small batches, then unthaw and use fresh when the Chinooks, browns and cohos move close to the piers or into the rivers in the coming weeks.

Skein pieces can be fished under a bobber or suspended off bottom with a slip sinker rig and a piece of marshmallow, or drifted into a deeper pool as fish make their way upriver.

Volunteers needed

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking volunteers to teach hunters of all experience levels practical hunting skills.

In addition to hunter education classes, the DNR and its contracted partners (Becoming an Outdoors Woman, National Deer Association, Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors, Pheasants Forever and Raised at Full Draw) offer additional instruction and continuing education to hunters of all experience levels.

The agency is seeking volunteers to coordinate and instruct programs that teach hands-on skills to help participants gain the experience and confidence needed to hunt independently. Some examples of programs around the state are on a calendar here: https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/events?type=fishing,hunting,trapping,shooting.

DNR hunting and shooting sports program specialist Emily Lehl said opportunities include outdoor skills and learn to hunt programs, and mentored hunts hosted by landowners.

All volunteer instructors must pass a background check, either through the DNR or through one of its partner organizations. Interested? Contact Lehl at Emily.Iehl@wisconsin.gov.

Whitetail Watch

Whitetail Watch is an anti-poaching initiative created by Whitetails Unlimited with a goal of improving hunter/landowner relations and reducing the crime of poaching. Participating landowners post the free signs on their property, serving as visible reminders to poachers that citizens are on the watch and suspicious activity will be reported to the wildlife law enforcement.

Whitetail Watch property signs are made from PVC, measuring 11.25 inches on a side, and are white with red and black printing. Decals matching the sign, measuring 3.5 inches on a side, are also available.

The recommended posting distance for Whitetail Watch signs is one sign for every 300 feet of road frontage or four signs per 40 acres.

To order complimentary Whitetail Watch signs or decals, call Whitetails Unlimited National Headquarters at 920.743.6777 or send an email to nh@whitetailsunlimited.com.

Shorebirds Day

Sunday is World Shorebirds Day, a global celebration of shorebird conservation to raise awareness about shorebirds, their migrations, and the need to protect the habitats they use: nesting areas, migration stopover sites and wintering ranges.

Shorebirds include sandpipers, plovers, avocets, stilts, godwits, curlews, oystercatchers, and similar sandpiper-like birds that are highly mobile, with many species migrating across continents and even hemispheres. They rely on diverse habitats from Arctic tundra to prairie marshes and tropical wetlands, estuaries, inland mudflats, lakeshores, and other shallow water areas where they find food and safe open spaces.

During the week, the Global Shorebird Count is conducted by birders and other interested people and documented on internet platforms like eBird. Want to learn more? Visit https://www.worldshorebirdsday.org/.
