KEWAUNEE - A friendly challenge has been added to this year's seventh annual Weather Warm-Ups Collection which begins across Kewaunee County Nov. 20.

The collection is a charitable drive to collect new or gently used sweatshirts and hoodies for students in need in the county. Any youth to adult size is needed. The warm weather wear that's collected will be distributed during the Kewaunee County Back To School Program that is held each August. Some will go to the Thrift Shop operated by the Lakeshore Community Food Pantry in Kewaunee.

The challenge is being issued throughout the county to see which community (Algoma, Kewaunee or Luxemburg/Casco) donates the most items.

The Weather Warm-Ups Collection is being organized and run by Christopher Cullen, a Kewaunee High School student, and his mother, Judy. Christopher's older brother, James, launched the first Weather Warm-Ups drive during the 2016 holiday season, and in the years since, they and their middle brother, Cameron, all have worked together on charitable collections or organized similar drives on their own, guided by their mother and father, James, Sr. Christopher is heading the effort this year because his older siblings are in college.

Besides Weather Warm-Ups, the brothers also have held a diaper collection for the Alexandrina Pregnancy Resource Center in Green Bay; Providing For Pets, collecting pet supplies for local facilities; and Kid Comfort Packs, tote bags filled with items to help children in the county who are victims of abuse to relieve stress and gain some comfort and confidence; those were distributed by the Kewaunee County Violence Intervention Project in Algoma.

The Weather Warm-Ups Collection runs from Nov. 20 to Dec. 3. Bins will be located at Piggly Wiggly in Kewaunee, Denny’s SuperValu in Algoma, Stodola’s IGA in Luxemburg, and Kewaunee, Algoma and Luxemburg-Casco high schools.

With winter approaching, new and gently used hoodies and sweatshirts are being requested for students in need in Kewaunee County through the annual Weather Warm-ups Collection.
