Ethan Melotte rushed 19 times for 163 yards and four touchdowns and completed six of seven passes for 149 yards and two TDs as Algoma hammered Gibraltar in 8-man football last Thursday, 42-6.
Melotte connected on six of seven passes on the night, five of them to Cooper Fay for 127 yards and first-quarter strikes of 41 and 59 yards that sandwiched a five-yard run by Melotte and produced a 20-0 lead after one quarter.
Melotte added another five-yard run in the second, then a two-point pass to Fay for a 28-0 lead at the half. He scored twice more in the third quarter on runs of two and 16 yards, and another two-point pass to Fay made it 42-0 after three.
Jack Meverden, Parker Stewart and Jacob Blahnik combined for 72 rushing yards, with each averaging more than five yards a carry.
David Tebon and Blahnik each recovered fumbles, and Brady Walker had 11 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. Jack Schwader added nine tackles, Blahnik seven and Kaden Bielawski a QB sack.
Kewaunee trailed 12-0 and 28-7 in the first half at Bonduel last Friday before scoring 15 unanswered to rally within 28-22 at the half.
Carter Moesch rushed 14 times for 169 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Bears, and Malachi Gray added 128 yards on 13 carries. Moesch scored the first two TDs before Diesel Bosdeck escaped for a 59-yarder. Moesch then broke loose for long touchdown runs of 54 and 56 yards.
Bosdeck and Mason Kovacs connected on a 17-yard TD pass with 2:29 left in the half, and Kewaunee forced a stop. The Bears muffed the punt attempt, and Dane Harrell picked it up and ran it back for a touchdown.
Bosdeck completed 15 of 20 passes for 115 yards and a score, while rushing five times for 65 yards and a TD. Blake Temme ran for 82 yards on 21 carries, and Kovacs caught six passes for 73 yards. Harrell added five catches for 25 yards, Peyton Schaller three for 10, and Baylor Elliot two for 29.
Landon LaTour had seven pancake blocks, while Blake Bortolini and Harrell combined for 22 tackles. LaTour and Benjamin VanGoethem each added eight tackles.
“We knew going in that it was going to be a big challenge, and we were going to be tested,” said Storm coach Randy Charles. “We got off to a slow start, but I was very proud of the way that they never gave up and battled back.”
Charles said the team needs to find a way to start faster, be consistent and finish drives.
“We definitely paid a price for this game, but time will tell if the lessons we learned are going to be worth it in the long run,” Charles said. “What the team does after this will have a big impact on the overall outcome of the season.”
Kewaunee hosts Oconto Falls on Youth Night this week.
Luxemburg-Casco’s Eli Derenne and Ben Klass combined for seven rushing touchdowns as the Spartans beat Kohler/Sheboygan Lutheran/Christian on the road last Friday.
Derenne ran 11 times for 234 yards and four touchdowns, while Klass rushed 15 times for 174 yards and three scores. Derenne also completed six of 10 passes for 131 yards. Trenton Price caught three balls for 64 yards, and Joey Jeanquart two for 55 yards.
Ethan Werner had 13 tackles to lead L-C’s defense, including eight solos and two tackles for loss. Julian Bailey added six tackles and Holden Kipp and Jeanquart each five.
The Spartans host Little Chute on Veteran’s Night Sept. 11.
