State-ranked Luxemburg-Casco beat Denmark 25-18, 15-25, 25-13, 25-20 in an early North Eastern Conference volleyball showdown Tuesday night in Luxemburg to improve to 3-0 in conference, 11-7 overall.
“I think the difference was we served so well, and got them out of system,” said Spartans coach Jeff Frey. “It wasn’t always pretty, but we found a way to win.”
Claire Schleis had 17 assists, 11 digs and seven kills; Stella Schleis 16 assists, five digs and four aces; Aubrey Frey 26 kills, 13 digs and four aces; Ali Jansen eight kills and Jenna Annoye 21 digs and two aces.
Frey said the NEC is a much-improved conference this year. His team plays a tough Freedom squad Tuesday, then Little Chute Thursday. One match at a time, but maybe a little peek ahead to a very good Oconto Falls team Oct. 6.
“When we get this all figured out, and everybody starts flowing, I like where we’re going to be when it matters most (tournament time),” said Frey. “Everyone wants to beat you. Everyone is going to give you their best. We talk a lot that pressure’s a privilege. They’ve earned the privilege to have that target on their back. Embrace it and give it your best shot.”
At Clintonville last week, the Spartans won three straight. The Schleis sisters combined for 27 assists, and Frey had 15 kills, six digs and five aces. Caydence Hruska had six digs and six aces.
Meanwhile, in Packerland play, Kewaunee blanked Algoma last Thursday and swept Mishicot Tuesday.
Luxemburg-Casco’s Claire DuChateau placed second for the girls and Ezra Treml fifth for the boys in Friday’s Nightfall Classic 920 cross country meet in Neenah.
DuChateau had a time of 18:24, and Treml 15:55. The Spartan boys placed third and the girls finished seventh.
Kewaunee’s Natalie Miller placed 18th in 21:44. Kaylyn Martin was 21st and Milli Paul 24th, both in under 22 minutes. Gage Vlies led the Storm boys with 48th place in 19:37.
Algoma’s top runners were Brayden Brumm (22:07) and Ellie Reif (22:17). Reif was 29th.
The Spartans won the North Eastern Conference meet Tuesday. Brielle Snowberry was second with a score of 40, Reese Bandow was third (44) and Chloe Treml sixth (48).
A day earlier, the Spartans were third in a match at Oconto Falls. Bandow was the top golfer for L-C with a 90. Snowberry finished with 92.
