Health department introduces Get Healthy Kewaunee County with weekly walks

KEWAUNEE – The Kewaunee County Public Health Department is holding weekly walks for exercise in Algoma and Luxemburg as part of its recently introduced Get Healthy Kewaunee County wellness initiative.
Get Healthy was formed following the county’s most recent Community Health Assessment. The Nutrition and Physical Activity Work Group has been meeting monthly to look at ways to promote health and wellness within the community through nutrition and physical activity.
“It’s important for our residents to take charge of their health,” said Cindy Kinnard, RN and director of the health department. “Being healthy and staying fit can be fun, and walking is a great way to prevent future chronic disease.”
Anyone interested in walking can join one or both groups. Friends, families and pets are welcome.
On Tuesday evenings, Prevea Health will offer a walking group that will meet at 6 p.m. at Harvest Community Church, E1479 Rockledge Road, Luxemburg and walk for approximately one hour.
Also, Door County Medical Center of Algoma will offer a group that will take a walk of about an hour at the Algoma Community Wellness Center (attached to the high school) at 6 p.m. Wednesdays. The auxiliary gym will be used in inclement weather.
A walking group within the city of Kewaunee will be announced soon.
Get Healthy also is working with local grocery stores to sponsor a healthy recipe of the week. Ingredients for the recipe will be featured in the store near the recipe aisles so shopping will be made easy. In addition, informational displays will be featured within stores and area businesses promoting healthy nutrition concepts.
