A second death of a Kewaunee County resident because of complications from COVID-19 was reported Monday.

The person who died was between the ages of 50 and 65 and had been hospitalized, according to Kewaunee County Public Health Department Director Cindy Kinnard. No other information was released by the health department, but an obituary in the Aug. 1 Star-News says 56-year-old Carol Weise of Algoma died Sunday from COVID-19 virus complications.

The only previously reported death from COVID-19 complications in the county happened April 13, when longtime Luxemburg business leader Jerry Simonar passed away at age 87.

Tuesday's report from the health department said the county has had a total of 105 tests for the virus come back positive, an increase of 12 over the previous seven days. There were 212 negative tests reported in the past week, adding up to a total of 2,717. The percentage of positive tests in the past week is 5.7%, an increase from 2.7% the week before but less than the 7.7% positive rate two weeks ago. The rate since testing began this spring remained relatively steady despite this week's increase, rising from 3.6% to 3.7%.

Of the 105 positive cases, 16 are considered active (compared to 18 a week ago) but none currently are hospitalized, with 87 considered recovered. There are 65 test results pending.

Meanwhile, Door County's positive test results rose by seven, from 76 on July 20 to 83 as of Tuesday afternoon. There were 250 test results in the past week which came back negative, marking the rate of positive tests at 2.7% for that time, slightly greater than the 2% rate of positives since testing began. A total of 4,064 tests have come back negative.

Of those 83 positive cases, 17 are considered active with 63 recovered. Three Door residents have died from COVID-19 but none since early May. As of Tuesday, 277 results are pending.

The Door County numbers come on the heels of an emergency advisory issued by its health department July 23 that everyone ages 5 and older wear a face covering or mask when in public, as well as following recommendations to practice social distancing and avoid large gatherings of people.

Two popular restaurants — Husby's Food & Spirits in Sister Bay and Cornerstone Pub in Baileys Harbor — temporarily closed within the past two weeks after an employee at each tested positive for the virus, and Sunset Shores Resort in Baileys Harbor also temporarily closed after out-of-town guests tested positive.
