Chiefs fall to Lookouts

ASHWAUBENON – A rough first inning proved too much for the Kewaunee Chiefs baseball team to overcome on June 27 at Ashwaubomay Lake as the Ashwaubenon Lookouts brought eight across in the opening frame to defend their home diamond on an 11-3 victory in Shoreland League play.
The Chiefs (1-4) got some offense going in the first as Nathan Havlovitz singled before moving to second on a groundout by Lincoln Barta.
Kewaunee starting pitcher Wyatt Kruse was up next and his sharp eye earned a walk against Ashwaubenon’s Marty Kiernan to set up the game’s first scoring opportunity but the home team pitcher got out of trouble by fanning the next batter he faced to retire the side.
Trevor Cornell led things off for the Owls and he singled before both Jeremy Cox and Owen Geurts earned walks to load the bases with nobody out.
Up next for Ashwaubenon was Cam Jackson, and he hit one into centerfield for a double, scoring Cornell and Cox.
At bat next, still with no outs on the board, Josh LaFleur got ahold of one for a single that scored another pair for the home team.
The long first frame culminated with RBIs from Cornell, on his second hit of the inning, and Cox for an 8-0 lead.
Kewaunee’s offense got going in the third inning with a lead-off single on a chopper from Cam Hanrahan.
Payton Kohnle then reached on a single but Hanrahan was tagged out before making it to second.
Havlovitz then got to first on a walk before Kruse knocked in a run with a single to shallow right field, advancing Havlovitz to third with two outs.
With Andrew Richard batting next, Havlovitz came home on a pitch that made it past the Ashwaubenon catcher.
Richard came through with a single later in his at-bat to plate Kruse.
That would be the end of the scoring for the Chiefs on the night though, as the Lookouts would plate another three to wrap up the game and move to 5-2 on the season.
