KEWAUNEE – Kewaunee senior and floor general Thomas Stangel stepped onto his home court to take on Peshtigo Thursday, Feb. 8 just 29 points shy of hitting the 1,000 mark for his career.
Midway through the second half, with 29 points in the bag and the Storm in control of things, Stangel, working against one of the Bulldogs’ best defenders in Will McMahon, drove into the lane and put away a tough basket for points 1,000 and 1,001.
“He’s the leader out there. It’s his team and he takes care of it, he just does,” said Kewaunee head coach Matt Bosdeck. “When we need a shot, he wants the ball. And he’s not selfish to the point where he’s going to take it every time. If he can find the open guy, he’s happy with that too.”
Stangel finished the night with 33 points, five boards, four assists, a steal and two blocks.
“As soon as I started playing varsity basketball,” answered Stangel upon being asked when reaching 1,000 points turned into a realistic goal. “I knew it was going to be a lot of hard work but I’ve had a lot of great coaches that have helped me out along the way. (Basketball) has always been my favorite sport and my parents have also really supported me the whole time.”
The Storm, who never trailed in the second half, were down 8-4 early in this one before taking the lead for good on a jumper by Stangel to make it 13-12 Kewaunee.
“We were letting them score on us right away to start tonight and I was not happy about that but then we really picked up the defense, only gave up 23 in the first half and I was very happy with that total,” said coach Bosdeck. “In the end, we found a way to maintain a decent lead.”
Braxton Riha had another big game for the Storm with 23 points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocks to go along with 10 points, four steals, five assists and seven boards from Connor Kilgore.
