County to get more than $4 million in separate state road aid programs

Posted

KEWAUNEE COUNTY – County cities, villages and towns were set to receive a combined $540,000-plus in quarterly transportation aid payments from the state this month for improving and maintaining local roads and connecting highways.
By the time all four payment periods wrap up later this year — and combined with a separate agricultural roads grant program — county governments will have received more than $4 million for local road work.
The second round of general transportation aid funding for 2026 was announced Monday, with the City of Algoma getting almost $93,000 and the City of Kewaunee nearly $52,000.
The Town of Red River was next at $43,532.47, followed by the Town of Luxemburg ($42,206.65), Village of Luxemburg ($39,514.39) and the Town of Carlton ($38,155.92). The Towns of Franklin, Lincoln, Ahnapee, Montpelier, Casco and West Kewaunee are to receive more than $30,000 each, followed by the Town of Pierce (more than $21,000) and the Village of Casco ($3,691.96).
Those figures are in addition to more than $750,000 in first-quarter payments.

The local totals are higher in January, July and October, when the county government also gets funding. Kewaunee County received more than $218,000 the first quarter, while towns, villages and cities combined for another $540,000-plus.
Funding is primarily from motor fuel taxes and vehicle registration fees. Payments are determined by a percentage of eligible expenditures or a per-mile payment — whichever is higher.
Meanwhile, bipartisan negotiations resulted in a $150 million investment in the 2025-27 state budget to continue repairing and improving rural roads through the Agricultural Roads Improvement Program (ARIP).
Nearly $50 million in ARIP grants were recently awarded to support 29 new projects focused on improving roads used to transport agricultural and forestry products that support Wisconsin’s more-than-$116-billion agricultural industry.
That includes more than $1.3 million for County Hwy. B in Kewaunee County, and nearly $2.5 million for Mill Road in the Town of Forestville in southern Door County.
