Kewaunee boys win key ‘Pack’ battle

Storm surge in second half erases Algoma’s advantage

Posted
KEWAUNEE COUNTY – Kewaunee kept its hopes for at least a share of the Packerland boys basketball title alive with a 64-43 win over visiting Algoma last Friday.

The game was much closer than the final score indicates.

The Wolves led by five early before settling for a two-point lead, 25-23, at intermission.

“I told the kids in the locker room, the first half we looked like the best team in the conference,” said Algoma Coach Eric Schneider. “The second half, not so much.”

Freshman Diesel Bosdeck had 12 of his team-high 15 points after halftime for Kewaunee, including two of his three triples.

The Storm made ten 3s on the night, seven of them in the second half.

Avery Jerabek (13), Connor Kilgore (12) and Cooper Kolmorgen (10) were also in double figures, and each hit a pair of threes.

“When we play together, the second half is how we play,” said Kewaunee Coach Matt Bosdeck. “I told the guys at halftime, keep playing the defense, the shots are going to fall. We weren’t sharing the ball enough early. Defensively, we started applying more ball pressure to not let them dictate the pace of the game.”

Said Schneider, “We let them get some runout layups in transition, and that led to us forcing offensively more than I would have liked. Taking those quick shots isn’t what we need to do. We need to settle in and work for something good.”

After falling behind 34-27, the Wolves went on a 10-4 run to cut the lead to 38-37, but were outscored 26-6 the rest of the way.

Algoma played without senior starter Cody Kirchman, who was ill.

Parker Lischka led the team with 16 points.

Chase Romdenne and Braeden Leist each added 10.

The Wolves then beat Valders 69-49 Monday and N.E.W. Lutheran, Tuesday, 66-59.

Lischka scored 26, Romdenne 12, Leist 11 and Kirchman and Charlie Prokash each 10 in the win over Valders.

Lischka had 27 and Romdenne 23 at N.E.W.

Meanwhile, the Storm beat Gibraltar Tuesday, 71-46. Kilgore scored 19, Jerabek 15, Bosdeck 14 and Dane Harrell 12.

A week earlier, in an 87-66 win over Shiocton, Kewaunee got five three-pointers and 21 points from Jerabek.

Kilgore added 20, Bosdeck 13, and Dane Harrell 10.

Falls tops Storm

Six-foot-two senior Addison Schliewe scored 29 points to lead Sheboygan Falls, the state’s ninth-ranked Div. 3 girls basketball team, to a 64-55 win over visiting Kewaunee last Friday.

Storm coach Lynn Geier said she wasn’t complaining about the calls, but her team was whistled 32 times compared to 14 for the Falcons.

“It was a physical game,” Geier said. “We never led, (but) got within three with about 1:50 left.”

Five players — Gabby Stangel, Summer Walechka, Lily Morton, Braelyn Chevalier and Breanna Riha — fouled out, and Falls shot 37 free throws, making 19. Kewaunee was 7-of-10.

“Sheboygan Falls has a great program, and it was a good game for us to be involved in,” Geier said. “Hopefully playing this higher competition continues to help down the road.”

With many players in foul trouble early, the Storm trailed 38-23 at the half.

Walechka had all eight of her points before intermission.

Jade Kroll had 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to pace the Storm, with 18 points coming in the second half.

Lexie Hanrahan scored 12, all on three-pointers, and Gabby Stangel added 11.

Kewaunee (10-0 Packerland, 13-2 overall) then beat N.E.W. Lutheran Monday, with Kroll scoring 18, Stangel 12 and Riha and Hanrahan each 8. The Storm made 27 of 33 free throws, led by Kroll (12-of-13) and Stangel (9-of-10).

Spartan boys, girls split

The Luxemburg-Casco boys beat Marinette 68-47 Jan. 23.
All 11 players scored in the win, led by Josh Parins with 18, Tatem Klaubauf 12 and Jacob Coisman 10.

L-C (2-8 North Eastern Conference, 3-12 overall) got 19 from Parins and 18 from James Glampe 18 in an 80-66 loss at Oconto Falls Tuesday night.
Coisman and Bryce Piesler each added 11.

Meanwhile, the Spartan girls hammered Clintonville 57-14 Jan. 24 before falling at home to Bay Port Monday, 50-39. Brianna Bray had 14, Sienna Blohowiak 13 and Chloe Host and Alayna Deprez each nine in the win. Bray had 19, including four three-pointers, in the loss.

She had 18 first-half points against Bay Port. Blohowiak added 10 points.

The Spartans are 6-5 in the North Eastern Conference, 6-10 overall.

Daoust to 3,000?

Southern Door senior sharpshooter Drew Daoust has moved quickly up the Wisconsin high school basketball all-time scoring list this season.

He poured in 40 points Friday night and 33 Tuesday to climb into third place with 2,698 heading into Thursday’s game against Brillion, just 26 points behind second-place Mickey Crowe of St. Nazianz JFK Prep (1971-‘75).

Anthony Pieper, who led Wausaukee to a Div. 4 state title his senior year (1993), holds the record at 3,391.

While that’s out of reach for Daoust, he has a shot at becoming only the second Wisconsin high school boys basketball player to score 3,000 career points.

Heading into a home game against Brillion Thursday, the Eagles were 13-2 overall, 10-0 in the Packerland.

Algoma girls split

The Gerdmann sisters — sophomore Claire and junior Therese — combined for 22 points to help Algoma beat a scrappy Oneida Nation team Saturday, 58-40.

The Wolves led by just two, 23-21, at the half. Claire had 14 points and Brooke Mattson 13 to lead the way. Mattson had three three-pointers.

On Monday night, the Wolves lost at Sheboygan Falls, 47-39.

Schliewe had 29 points and became the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,484 career points to go along with more than 550 rebounds.

Jadyn Nellis had 12 points, including a trio of threes, and Bristol Schmidt added 10.
