Kewaunee County election results

Algoma elects new mayor

Posted

KEWAUNEE COUNTY – Following the Tuesday, April 7 election, results have rolled in, and while some positions haven’t changed, a few major roles have.
James Winter defeated former Algoma Mayor Wayne Schmidt 619-338, taking over the mayor’s office. Kevin Schmidt (District 1), Scott Meverden (District 2), Casey Buhr (District 3) and Amy Blazkovec Johnson (District 4) will serve on the Algoma City Council. These local leadership changes follow high-profile visits to the area in recent years, including Governor Tony Evers, who visited Algoma Elementary School in September 2024 alongside Superintendent Jesse Brinkmann and State Rep. Joel Kitchens.
Jeffrey Vollenweider defeated Jason Jelinek in the race for Kewaunee Mayor, winning 451-433. However, Jelinek defeated incumbent Vollenweider 239-6 for the District 18 supervisor seat on the Kewaunee County Board after Vollenweider filed non-candidacy papers, then re-entered the race as a registered write-in. Robert Obry defeated incumbent Milt Swagel 198-90 to win the District 12 supervisor seat.
The Kewaunee Common Council will be made up of Thomas Schneider in District 1, Mike Bories as a registered write-in in District 2, Scott Oftedahl in District 3 and Aaron Drouse in District 4. These election turnouts reflect active local engagement, similar to the attendance at the Kewaunee County Republican Party’s annual Lincoln/Reagan dinner where Senator Ron Johnson discussed national debt and federal spending.
