Kewaunee junior guard Jade Kroll had never scored 30 points in a game before last Friday’s 82-24 Storm win at Gibraltar.
She almost got that by halftime, with 28 of her career-high 39 coming in the first 18 minutes of play.
Gabby Stangel added 13 points and Lexi Hanrahan 10 for the Storm (9-0 Packerland, 13-1 overall), who play at the state’s 8th ranked Div. 3 team, Sheboygan Falls, Friday night.
Falls’ only losses have been by 9 to Pius XI Catholic (ranked 4th in Div. 2), by 2 to Muskego (ranked 7th in Div. 1) and by 4 to Manitowoc Lutheran (ranked 4th in Div. 4).
Somehow, Kewaunee isn’t ranked in the weekly coaches poll, even though its only loss came Dec. 7 at Manitowoc Lutheran, 58-48.
“Everybody (fans) keeps talking about state,” Geier said. “But there hasn’t been a word of that, except on the outside. I shut that down as soon as I hear it. We don’t need that. We’re focusing on one game at a time, to up our seeding.”
Kroll is taking far fewer three-point shots this year, instead using her strength to get to the basket for high-percentage shots.
In the process, she’s raised her field goal percentage to an incredible .739, up from .486 her freshman season and .527 last year, when she won Packerland Conference Player of the Year honors.
Meanwhile, all of Tuesday’s planned boys and girls games were postponed due to no school because of extreme cold.
Only one game was played Monday night. Southern Door put up 91 points on Denmark in a 17-point win.
Drew Daoust scored 32 points to lead the Eagles. Lauden Berg added 19, and three others also reached double figures.
Daoust, a senior guard, has scored 2,626 points.
Last Saturday, he passed up former Sheboygan Lutheran and UW-Madison star Sam Dekker for the fifth spot all-time.
Next, at 2,654, is Cody Schmitz, a 6-5 guard who graduated from Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau last year, then Mike Koehler of Elkhart Lake (2,685).
If Daoust keeps scoring at his current pace, he would move to the No. 2 spot, past St. Nazianz JFK Prep legend Micky Crowe (2,724) Feb. 1 at home against Sevastopol.
Barring a doubling of Daoust’s already impressive 30 points per game average, No. 1 is out of reach at 3,391.
That record belongs to Wausaukee’s Anthony Pieper, who graduated in 1993.
Pieper went on to play at Marquette University, then internationally in Slovakia, Austria, Ireland and Belgium.
Algoma vs. Kewaunee
Two Packerland boys basketball teams each with one loss will try to stay within striking range of unbeaten Southern Door in a battle at Kewaunee Friday night.
The Wolves haven’t beaten the Storm since February, 2017.
Algoma is coming off a 71-43 win over visiting Gibraltar Saturday.
Senior Carson Leist had the best shooting game of his varsity career, hitting five three-pointers en route to a team-high 18 points.
Braeden Leist added 14, Parker Lischka 13 and Chase Romdenne 10.
Vikings’ junior guard Kayin Jackson slashed his way for a game-high 23.
Kewaunee beat Shiocton in a non-league game Friday, 87-66.

L-C girls upset Freedom
Sienna Blohowiak scored 13 points, Brianna Bray 8 and Alayna Deprez 7 as the Spartans handed visiting Freedom its first North Eastern Conference loss of the season Jan. 14. L-C led 16-13 at halftime.
Two nights later, the luck of the Irish ran out again in a 40-38 loss at Denmark.
Two nights later, the Spartans fell at Marinette, 41-36.
Bray scored 13, Deprez 8 and Blohowiak and Chloe Host each 5.
L-C had given the Marines its first conference loss Dec. 3
Heading into this weekend’s games, Freedom and Marinette were tied atop the NEC at 8-2, followed by Waupaca and Denmark at 7-3, Wrightstown 5-4 and L-C 5-5.
Waupaca 70, L-C boys 62
Sophomore guard Bryce Piesler came off the bench to score 17 of his team-high 20 points in the first half — including five of his six three-pointers on the night — as the Spartans built a 38-22 lead last Friday at Waupaca.
At one point, L-C led 29-9.
The Comets stepped up the defense in the second half, allowing just 24 points.
Sophomore guard Westen Lauritzen scored 19 of his game-high 26 in the second half, and senior forward Aaron Wolf had 17 of his 24 in the final 18 minutes.
Wolff’s three-pointer with 2:20 remaining gave the hosts the lead for good.
James Glampe had 12 points and Josh Parins 10 for the Spartans, who shot just seven free throws compared to 20 for Waupaca.
Algoma girls 42, NEW 35
Jadyn Nellis scored 12 points and Lauren Loucks and Sierra Slaby each 10 as the Wolves won at home Friday.
