On any given day, a strong pitching performance combined with timely hitting and error-free baseball can lead to an upset.
But as the season nears its halfway point — with Algoma already having two losses — the Kewaunee boys might be in the best position to defend their Packerland Conference co-championship. We’ll find out during an eight-day stretch May 2-9 when the Storm sandwiches road games against last year’s co-champs, Algoma and Gibraltar/Washington Island, with a home contest against Southern Door.
Meanwhile, in the North Eastern Conference, the Luxemburg-Casco boys were in a three-way tie for second at 4-2 earlier this week, a game behind Marinette.
Algoma got a five-inning, 10-0 shutout at Crivitz last Thursday, with Carson Leist throwing a one-hitter while striking out nine. Jacob Massey had two hits and five RBI while Charlie Prokash, Jonah Dahms and Leist also had two hits.
On Tuesday at Cedar Grove-Belgium, the Wolves led 6-3 but couldn’t hold on. The Rockets took advantage of walks, two errors and a hit for a four-run sixth and a 7-6 win. Leist was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Jack Schwader 1-for-3 with an RBI. Charlie Prokash gave up nine hits and five runs (three earned), striking out five in 5-1/3 innings. Leist took the loss, going 2/3 of an inning giving up two runs (none earned) while walking three batters.
On the girls side, the Tuesday, May 13 Algoma at Sevastopol softball game could be for an outright Packerland championship or — if Southern Door or Kewaunee can pull off an upset or two prior — a possible share of the title. Kewaunee is at Algoma next Friday.
Things are also heating up in the Northeastern Conference, where the Spartan girls (5-1) were tied with Denmark and Freedom, a game behind unbeaten Fox Valley Lutheran.
The Algoma girls continued their strong play, beating Crivitz 13-0 and Coleman 12-0 late last week, both in five innings, before stopping Peshtigo Monday, 11-4.
In the three games, Natalie Ray drove in a combined 10 runs on eight hits — including two home runs and a double — while Macie Zimmerman also homered twice and struck out 24 batters to surpass 400 in her career. The junior pitcher threw a one-hitter against Crivitz, a two-hitter against Coleman and a four-hitter against Peshtigo.
Madison Schneider had two hits against Crivitz, and Brooke Mattson and Bristol Schmidt added RBI singles. Schneider had a two-RBI double and Jadyn Nellis an RBI triple against Coleman, and Olivia Cabino and Mattson each had two hits against Peshtigo.
The Storm beat Sturgeon Bay 19-0 Thursday, getting five runs in the first, nine in the second and five more in the third. Breanna Riha had three hits and six RBI, including a three-run home run. Lexi Hanrahan tripled, and Ali Repitz had a three-RBI double, part of her five-RBI night. Repitz struck out eight batters.
On Monday, Southern Door’s Ashlynn Delfosse hit a walk-off home run as the Eagles beat the Storm 3-2. Kewaunee tied the game late with an RBI single by London Karnopp and an RBI sacrifice fly by Riha, who also had two hits.
A day later, Riha had three hits and three RBI in a 9-3 win over Howards Grove.
Vivian Bootz, Cora Schleis and Summer Walechka each had two hits.
L-C got a three-hitter from Kate Van Ess in a 17-1 win over Marinette and a five-hitter from Erin Cherovsky in a 4-2 win over Wrightstown last week. The Spartans had 21 hits against the Marines, including a grand slam home run by Riley Westlund.
Van Ess and Cherovsky had key singles in the fourth inning against the Tigers, along with a sacrifice bunt by Alayna Deprez. A passed ball and a throwing error led to two runs and a 3-0 lead at the time.
L-C survived a near-rally by Wrightstown in the final inning with a heads-up play by right fielder Claire Schleis, third baseman Van Ess and second baseman Westlund, who combined on a double play to end the threat.
On Tuesday, Cherovsky threw a five-hitter with nine strikeouts in an 8-0 win over Freedom. Kacie Jorgenson, Emmy Murphy and Cherovsky each had two hits while Rylan Kaminski and Van Ess joined Cherovsky with two RBIs each.
Luxemburg-Casco’s Jacob Coisman allowed just two hits and two walks in six innings while striking out 13 batters to lead the Spartans to a 1-0 win over visiting Waupaca Tuesday. Eli Derenne’s RBI ground-out in the third inning was the only run scored. Noah Chervenka had two hits and Derenne one.
Last Thursday, L-C beat Wrightstown 8-2. The Spartans’ number nine hitter Carson Blohowiak went 2-for-3. Landon Derenne had a two-run single and another RBI. Jacob Coisman walked twice, two of the eight issued by Tigers’ pitchers.
Coisman got the win, allowing three hits and one run over five innings, striking out six and walking five. Derenne finished up.
Earlier last week, L-C got 12 strikeouts from Jake Chervenka in a 5-2 win at home against Waupaca. Chervenka gave up six hits and two runs over six innings while walking three. A double by Coisman and a single by Eli Derenne were among the run-scoring hits.
