The group will open for UW-Madhatters

LUXEMBURG-CASCO – Sol Trane, Luxemburg-Casco High School’s own traveling a capella group, will perform at the Southern Door Community Auditorium (SDCA) on Saturday, Oct. 4 as the opening act for the renowned UW-Madhatters Men’s A Capella group.
Sol Trane, which is made up of 20 members, has been performing for about 15 years. The group originally picked their name as a reference to John Coltrane, a famous American saxophonist and bandleader, while also playing on the pun “Soul Train.”
The group performs pop a capella, which is popular music sung without any instrumental accompaniment. The singers create all the necessary sounds, including vocal arrangements that imitate percussion, horns and other instruments.
The term “a cappella” is Italian for “in the style of the chapel” and has evolved to mean any music sung purely by voice.
“There’ll be a lead singer who does the melody, generally. We split up the solos, and then everybody else does a background that is imitating instruments or other vocal parts,” LCHS music teacher and group leader Margaret Meder said.

Sol Trane practices one to two times a week and is made up of experienced performers, having traveled to participate in vocal and dance clinics and perform at festivals like Acapallooza. Students must audition to join the group, and Meder said that means the group is made up of some of the school’s most advanced singers. Some students are currently developing beatboxing skills, which Meder said is a particularly challenging part of a capella techniques.
The group is preparing two songs for their opening act at the Southern Door Community Auditorium: “The Sound of Silence” and “Superstitious.” Sol Trane typically performs a mix of top 40, classic rock and other popular songs, chosen by the members themselves. Meder said they wanted a moody, mysterious vibe to match the theme of their upcoming variety show, so the members chose songs fitting that theme.
Meder said the group first got the opportunity to perform at the SDCA last year through a video on their Facebook page which caught the attention of the auditorium. About half of this year’s group was a part of that performance, and Meder said that experience has helped everyone in the group to prepare and find their confidence for this year’s performance.
Sol Trane has multiple upcoming performances outside of their opening act at the SDCA, including a variety show in November and a Christmas concert with carols.
“Our kids really enjoy this pop a cappella and they’re really glad to have this opportunity to perform, and they’re really looking forward to their festival in December, and just being able to share this with the community,” Meder said.
