Hannah Miller brought the heat at a very cold Packerland Conference meet at Kewaunee May 19.
With a blustery wind off Lake Michigan and a feels-like temperature in the low- to mid-40s, the Storm junior won the 400-meter run (59.25), the 800 (2:25.97) the 1600 (5:15.24) and the triple jump (35 feet, 7 inches). Meanwhile, teammates Kaylyn Martin, Alison Szydel, Mia Ihlenfeldt and Milli Paul won the girls 4x800 in 11:44.59 and Chyanne Robinson the discus (111-10).
Southern Door narrowly edged Kewaunee 190-187 for the top spot on the girls’ side, while the Peshtigo boys kept the Storm from winning their seventh straight title, 182.5-174.
The Kewaunee boys got a first place from its 3200-meter relay team of Joey Schlies, Justin Lischka, Gage Vlies and Trevor Gauthier (9:09.55), and from Mitchell Boeder in the discus (154-5). Schlies, Lischka, Avery Jerabek and Gauthier teamed up for a second in the 1600 relay.
Algoma’s lone champ was Estella Marrero, who set a PR in clearing 9-6 in the pole vault.

Girls softball began WIAA regional play May 19, while golf and track regionals begin next Tuesday, boys baseball next Thursday and girls soccer June 3.
In Div. 2 softball, the Spartan girls — ranked third in the state — had a first-round bye and will play the winner of Notre Dame and Little Chute Tuesday at L-C. Win that one, and they’ll be shooting for a regional title at Luxemburg Thursday, probably against Denmark, before likely meeting top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Fox Valley Lutheran in the sectional opener June 3.
After an opening-round bye in Div. 4, second-seeded Algoma will likely host St. Mary Catholic this Tuesday. Win that one, and it could mean a regional title game against third-seeded Sevastopol Thursday at Peterson Park. The winner of that one would likely face the state’s No. 2-ranked Div. 4 team Mishicot in the sectional opener Monday, June 3.
In Div. 3, six-seed Kewaunee got a first-round bye and plays at three-seed New Holstein Tuesday.
Jake Chervenka no-hit Freedom in Luxemburg-Casco’s 2-1 win last Thursday. Landon Derenne and Ethan Werner both had two hits and an RBI for the Spartans. Chervenka struck out four and walked four.
Meanwhile, Kewaunee had five errors in a 5-1 loss at Manitowoc last Thursday. Waylon Delain had the Storm’s only hit. Jackson Walecka struck out three and gave up five hits in taking the loss. A day later, the Storm and Oconto were tied 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh with two outs when the game was delayed. Ethan Paplham had a couple hits.
Algoma blanked St. Thomas Aquinas 11-0 May 19, getting three RBI from Jacob Massey and two hits each from Carson Leist and Parker Lischka. Charlie Prokash struck out six and allowed just two hits.
Luxemburg-Casco scored eight runs in the second inning on four hits and two errors in an 11-1 home win over Kewaunee last Thursday.
Maggie Debaker had two hits and four RBI, and Rylan Kaminski three hits. Baylee Wypiszenski pitched the first three innings giving up two hits and three walks while striking out two to move to 5-0 on the season. Kate Van Ess finished the final three and gave up four hits with no walks, while striking out four.
On Monday, the host Spartans doubled up on Waupaca, beating the Comets 8-1 and 8-2. Erin Cherovsky struck out seven with no walks, and gave up two hits in five innings in game one, while Van Ess went all seven innings in game two to earn her sixth win of the year against no losses. Van Ess allowed three hits and one walk while striking out six. She also had a two-RBI single in the first game.
Kaminski, Cherovsky and Debaker all had RBI singles early in game two. Debaker had two RBI and Hannah Schley and Marissa Annoye each two hits as the Spartans improved to 20-3 on the season and 15-3 in the North Eastern Conference.
The Spartans beat Seymour 3-1 May 15and lost at Marinette May 19, 5-3. Ashley Fameree had 13 saves vs. the Thunder and 12 vs. the Marines.
Maggie Pravecheck, Casidee Jacobson and Emi Kuhn all scored goals vs. Seymour, while Aaliyah Wallace dropped in all three vs. Marinette, two of them unassisted.
