Athletics split two games before rainout

CASCO – The Casco Athletics played their way into the Shoreland League postseason with a convincing 10-0 win over Algoma on July 27, before suffering a loss to Manitowoc on the road in the opening game of a three-game series, 5-4, on July 31.
In its game against Algoma, the Athletics opened things up with a flurry of scoring and didn’t look back until the game was out of reach, plating two runs in each of the first three innings en route to a double-digit shutout victory.
Peyton Mrotek led the Casco offense with a three-for-three performance at the plate with two RBIs. Owen Deprez and Grady Brick also contributed a pair of RBIs each in the win.
Monday’s game in Manitowoc saw the Athletics out hit Manitowoc 13-9 only to come out on the wrong end of a 5-4 decision.

After falling behind 0-3 early after Manitowoc scored one in the second and two in the third, the Athletics tied the game up late by scoring three in the eighth inning, only to have Manitowoc reclaim the lead in the bottom half of the same inning with a pair of runs, which proved to be the difference as Casco could manage only one run in the final frame.
The Athletics’ runs came thanks to RBIs from Trenton Doell, Cole Bzwadka and Mitch Jandrin.
On Aug. 2, the Athletics, playing at home in a must-win Game 2 against Manitowoc, found themselves down 0-3 after nearly completing one full inning of play before a downpour put the game on hold long enough to warrant postponing the contest until the following day.
