Zack Kirchman

School: Algoma High

Parents: Roger and LIsa Kirchman

Algoma head soccer coach Dakota Berg described Kirchman as a high-motor forward whose stamina and long stride helped him outrun defenses and score some impressive goals for the Wolves over his four years playing on the team. After graduation this past June, Kirchamn departed for California and boot camp and embarked on his journey of becoming a member of the US Military.

When did you start playing soccer?

I started playing soccer around 1st grade.

Did you play any other sports?

I’ve also participated in cross country, basketball, and track.

You’re answering these questions from boot camp. Where are you right now and tell us a bit about what you’re doing.

I’m currently at Camp Pendleton in California. I’ve been doing a lot of hiking/marching. This week I will be qualifying on the rifle range.

Ted Lasso and Xbox make it look easy, but how hard is it really to score a goal in soccer?

I think it’s really difficult to score a goal because it can’t be done alone. The reason I scored most of my goals was because of my teammates around me.

What branch of the military have you decided to join, and why?

I am joining the Marines because they match with my values and beliefs. I also wanted to challenge myself and thought this was the best way to do it.

How excited were you to be accepted into the military?

I was excited because this is something I’ve wanted to do for about a year now.

What inspired you to join the military?

The opportunity to travel and see new places and try new things.
