The Ahnapee Legion team lost to Kewaunee County 3-0 and Ashwaubenon 6-5 in tournament play to finish their season.
Siggy Hansen surrendered only one earned run on four hits, striking out four and walking one in the loss to KC. Owen Danhausen led Ahnapee with two hits.
Despite out-hitting Ashwaubenon 11-6, the Trailblazers couldn’t find the will to win. Untimely walks became the difference in this game as Ahnapee surrendered four walks and four runs.
Ahnapee came back to battle in the seventh inning. Connor Mueller led off with a base hit, his third of the day, and later scored off a Jacob Massey double to pull within one.
Bo Tanck, Aaron Brey and Owen Danhausen each had a pair of hits.
Coach Justin Massey said while the record might not indicate it, the team had a great year.
The varsity, which is primarily made up of 16U players, was able to compete at a high level against all competition. While the lack of experience is what makes the difference in one-run games, the team noticeably matured as the season progressed.
“Friendships were made, hotel beds were made into wrestling mats, football games in the pool, late night excursions and a lot of good baseball played,” Massey said. “I could not be more proud of the players.”
The Trailblazers ran a JV/17U team as well as a Varsity/19U team this summer. The 17U team had a successful season and came out with a fourth-place finish in the Marinette Regional Tournament.
“We will continue to build this program and continue giving our local high school athletes a competitive and fun summer of baseball,” Massey said. “We can’t wait to see what this team can do in a couple years. Keep the calendars open for a run at state.”
