Chiefs earn one-run win at Algoma

Posted

Winless Algoma outhit undefeated Kewaunee 12-7 in a Shoreland Baseball League game at Perry Field Tuesday night, but the Chiefs walked away with an 8-7 win.

After the Wolves erased a five-run lead to trail by just two in the eighth — with the bases still loaded — Kewaunee called on recently-graduated star pitcher Brett Paulsen. He walked the first batter and it was suddenly a one-run game. However, Paulsen got a strikeout to end the threat, then struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth for the save.

Jackson Walecka earned the win. He gave up nine hits and three runs over six innings, striking out four and walking one. Carson Leist took the loss, giving up seven runs in three innings, but only three were earned. He allowed two hits, struck out three but walked four.

Jaden Diller went 3-for-5 and Brady Kita and Sam Zirbel each 2-for-5 for Algoma, while Paulsen and Collin Spranger each had two hits for the Chiefs.

Jack Peterson had a two-run home run for the Penguins in the first inning. Spranger’s two-RBI double was the biggest blow in a seven-run Kewaunee second. Diller had a pair of doubles.
