Only two county sports teams were still alive in WIAA tournament play as this issue was being wrapped up.
Both the Algoma and Kewaunee baseball teams were to play in Div. 3 regional finals late Thursday, the second-seeded Storm at home against three-seed New Holstein and the four-seed Wolves on the road against top-seeded and state-ranked Chilton. The winners will open sectional play Tuesday at Chilton.
Kewaunee had 14 hits in an 11-2 regional semifinal victory early Tuesday afternoon. Waylon Delain had a double and two RBI, and Brett Paulsen and Ethan Paplham each scored three runs. Paulsen struck out 13.
Meanwhile, Algoma beat Howards Grove 3-1 last Thursday before knocking out Manitowoc Roncalli at Perry Field Wednesday, 3-0.
In the win over the visiting Tigers, Carson Leist had a pair of hits and an RBI, and Charlie Prokash struck out 11 and allowed just four hits. Against Roncalli, Prokash struck out 15 in another four-hit outing while Leist, Chase Romdenne and Jordan Fenendael each had two hits.
In a Div. 2 regional opener last Thursday, Waupaca ended Luxemburg-Casco’s season 7-1, allowing just five hits.
In Div. 4, Gibraltar/Washington Island beat Assumption 5-1 in Fish Creek Tuesday. The second-seeded Vikings hosted three-seed Iola-Scandinavia Thursday for the right to advance to Tuesday’s sectional opener in Plover. If they won, they’d likely play Pacelli, the state’s second-ranked Div. 4 team, for a chance to play in the state tournament.
All three girls softball teams are done for the season. Kewaunee was eliminated in a Div. 3 semifinal last Tuesday, Luxemburg-Casco lost a regional final against Denmark Thursday in Div. 2, and Algoma fell in a Div. 4 sectional opener Tuesday.
The Storm (8-10 on the season) got three hits from Vivian Bootz and two each from four other players in a 6-5 loss at New Holstein; L-C dropped the rubber match in the season series with Denmark, 3-2; and the Wolves were blanked by Mishicot, the state’s #2 team in Div. 4 polls, 4-0.
The Spartans finished 21-4, and tied for second in the North Eastern Conference with Denmark at 15-3. Unbeaten Fox Valley Lutheran won the title.
After splitting the conference games, unranked Denmark beat L-C (ranked third in Div. 4) in tournament play, then handed Fox Valley Lutheran its first loss of the season in the sectional opener, 9-3. FVL held the No. 1 spot in the final D-2 coaches poll.
At Luxemburg, the two-seed Spartans fell behind the Vikings early, but Alayna Deprez had a two-out single to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. In the fifth, Vanny Umentum’s two-run homer was the difference-maker. L-C’s Lauren Lindsley had a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh.
The Spartans played error-free defense, including five three-up, three-down innings — 10 infield outs and five fly balls to outfielders.
Erin Cherovsky went the distance, giving up six hits with two strikeouts to finish 10-4 on the season.
College-ball-bound Kate Van Ess finished her high school career with a 21-0 record pitching, striking out 102 against 26 walks. She had a fielding percentage of 98.4, and batting average of .332 with 58 RBI, 10 doubles, two triples and two home runs. She walked 35 times, was hit by five pitches and struck out 22 times.
Denmark (22-7) traveled to Waupun (18-9) Thursday in a sectional final.
Junior pitcher Macie Zimmerman struck out seven and walked two, allowing just one hit — a seventh-inning home run to senior starting pitcher Addison Schauske — in a 4-1 regional championship win over Sevastopol last Thursday. Schauske gave up five hits, struck out five and walked two.
Brooke Mattson’s two-run double and Nora Krause’s RBI single gave Algoma a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Madison Schneider had two hits, and the Wolves played error-free defense.
At Mishicot Wednesday, Zimmerman allowed only three hits and struck out seven but the Indians got another near-perfect game from senior standout Kiran Sanford. The left-handed pitcher allowed just one hit — a fourth-inning leadoff single by Mattson — and struck out 14 as Mishicot tries for its third straight trip to state. The Indians (24-3) played Manawa (19-4) at Crivitz Thursday in a sectional final.
Mishicot has just one loss to an in-state team, Oakfield. A year ago, they were 29-0 with a 2-0 lead in the top of the seventh in a state semifinal before a throwing error and some timely hitting allowed Laconia to escape with a 3-2 win. Sanford led the state in 2024 with seven no-hitters or perfect games, and like Zimmerman, is the school’s all-time strikeout leader.
Algoma finished 14-7.
