Dozens of area athletes dreaming of competing at the state track and field meet at UW-Lacrosse next weekend need to survive the cut at sectionals first.
Division 2 qualifiers from Luxemburg-Casco and Kewaunee were set to compete at a sectional in Marinette Friday, while D-3 qualifiers from Algoma had a road trip to Marathon.
The Spartan boys won the regional at Chilton Tuesday. They scored 137.5 points, edging second-place Denmark by 5.5 points. Southern Door was third in the nine-team competition.
On the girls side, host Chilton scored 125, ahead of second-place Southern Door (116.66) and third-place Kewaunee (102).
The Spartan boys were paced by double winners Kyan Lynts in the 1600 (4:40.70) and 3200 (10:31.41), and Mason Trimberger in the 110 hurdles (15.47 prelims, 15.60 finals) and 300 hurdles (40.87), the latter a new personal record time. Cameron Dorner won the long jump, going 20 feet, 10.5 inches.
The Storm’s Hannah Miller won the 800 (2:23.85), 1600 (5:18.10) and triple jump (34-06), and anchored the 4x400 team’s 4:11.33 first-place finish. Other team members were Natalie Miller, Kaylyn Martin and Braelyn Witcpalek.
L-C’s McKenna Rank established a new personal record in winning the high jump with a leap of 5-3, four inches above the second-place finisher.
In a D-3 regional at Hilbert, the Algoma boys placed third of 12 teams with 82 points, just 2.5 points behind second-place Valders. Manitowoc Lutheran ran away with first, scoring 143.
The Wolves’ Brennan Buckman won the pole vault, clearing 12-06, while teammate Wyatt Fay was second at 12-00 and Cooper Fay fourth at 11-06 (PR). Alex Kirchman placed fifth in the 3200-meter run with a PR of 10:47.63, and Algoma’s 4x100 team of Buckman, Wyatt Fay, Jack Meverden and Hunter O’Hern placed third with a time of 46.75. Meanwhile, the 4x800 team of Will Vera, Aiden Moen, Chance Radar and Kirchman finished third in 8:55.44.
Algoma took three of the top six places in the shot put, with John Kirchman going 44-08 (PR), good for third; Ethan Melotte, (42-09) fourth and Lane Cochart, (38-09.50, PR) sixth. Kirchman also qualified in the discus, placing fourth with a toss of 122-03. Braden Crewe was fourth in the high jump (5-10).
On the girls side, Algoma’s Estella Marrero placed second in the pole vault, clearing 9-06.

WIAA regionals got underway Thursday. Four-seed Algoma hosted Howards Grove Thursday in a Div. 3 regional opener. Win, and the Wolves would likely host Roncalli Tuesday. Two-seed Kewaunee will host the winner of Valders and Manitowoc Lutheran Tuesday.
Meanwhile, five-seed Luxemburg-Casco hosted Waupaca in a Div. 2 opener. Win, and the Spartans would likely play at Oconto Falls Tuesday. Earlier this week, L-C dropped its last regular season game 8-2 to Green Bay Preble. The Spartans had five hits, including one hit and two RBI from Landon Derenne.
Thursday, May 22, Kewaunee got a one-hitter with eight strikeouts from Brady Pribek in a 9-0 win over Crivitz. The Storm had 10 hits, including two each for Pribek and Noah Hudson.
Kewaunee also beat Sturgeon Bay 11-2. Brett Paulson had four hits and Connor Kilgore, Diesel Bosdeck, Waylon Delain and Alec Carlson each two, with Delain posting a grand slam and Carlson also clearing the bases. Paulsen and Delain combined to allow just three hits while striking out 11.
Also on May 22, the Wolves got a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh from Charlie Prokash to beat Peshtigo 3-2. Carson Leist, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning, scored the winning run. It was the eighth straight win for Algoma.
Leist went the first five innings, giving up two hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Prokash got the W, finishing up the last two with three strikeouts and no hits allowed. He and Parker Lischka each had two hits.
In a doubleheader, L-C split with Oconto Falls, losing 13-3 before winning game two with a final score of 3-2. Gage Delcore had two hits in the opener, and Reagan Doell an RBI game-winning single in the top of the sixth. Jacob Coisman struck out 15 and allowed three hits in getting the win.
On Friday, Valders beat Kewaunee 2-1. Noah Hudson had two of the Storm’s three hits and took the loss on the mound despite giving up just three hits.
Luxemburg-Casco crushed Notre Dame 8-0 in a Div. 2 regional game at Luxemburg Tuesday. Kate Van Ess doubled and singled with two RBI. Kacie Jorgensen also had a pair of RBI. Erin Cherovsky pitched six innings, allowing four hits with five strikeouts.
The Spartans hosted Denmark Thursday, May 29. If they secure that win, they’d likely meet top-seeded Fox Valley Lutheran Tuesday.
In Div. 3, six-seed Kewaunee fell to three-seed New Holstein Tuesday, 6-5, despite racking up 13 hits to seven for the Huskies. Vivian Bootz had three hits and Breanna Riha, Lexi Hanrahan, Mariah Schlies and London Karnopp each had two.
Also Tuesday, second-seeded Algoma found itself down 1-0 to seven-seed St. Mary Catholic until the bottom of the third inning at Peterson Park, when Macie Zimmerman smashed a grand slam. Natalie Ray added a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-1 final.
Zimmerman allowed five hits over seven innings, striking out eight and walking three. Ray had two hits and Sierra Slaby a single with two walks and one run scored.
The Wolves hosted three-seed Sevastopol Thursday in a Div. 4 regional final, with the winner likely to face top-seeded Mishicot Tuesday in a sectional opener. The Pioneers blanked Manitowoc Roncalli 10-0 in five innings, getting a no-hitter from Addison Schauske. She and Naomi Rikkola each had three hits.
Last Thursday, Emi Kuhn’s unassisted goal and three saves from Teagan Gunderson propelled the Spartans to a 1-0 win over St. Mary Catholic. L-C followed that with a 3-1 win over Waupaca Tuesday, getting two goals from Aaliyah Wallace and another from Casidee Jacobson. Ashley Fameree had 12 saves.
WIAA Div. 3 tournament play begins next week. The seventh-seeded Spartans get an opening round bye, then host Waupun at 7 p.m. June 5. Win, and L-C would likely play at two-seed Kiel next Saturday.
Kewaunee and Luxemburg-Casco each took third in their respective golf regionals earlier this week. The Storm’s Evan Maccaux placed first with rounds of 41 and 37, for a 78. L-C’s top finishers were seniors James Glampe (76) and Josh Parins (84).
